Mules compete for first time in 09-10

The NWCA No. 15 ranked Mules wrestling team hosted the 35th annual UCM Open, Saturday. The University of Missouri and Oklahoma State University brought many of their starters. Newman University, Fort Hays State, Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, and the University of Central Oklahoma also competed in the double-elimination tournament, among others.
Senior Cory Bloodgood placed sixth in the 141 pound weight class, bowing out to Fort Hays State’s Andre Harrison by way of major decision, 16-5. He wrestled to a 2-2 record on the day, one of them a 7-2 decision over Missouri Tiger Jason Tutt. Junior Cody Gillenwater set a 3-2 record at 141, and in his first collegiate wrestling match, Doug Thompson went 3-2 at 174 pounds.
Together, Oklahoma State and Missouri won the championship in every weight class. The Cowboys crowned seven tournament champions while three Tigers stood atop the podium. Of the 20 athletes wrestling for first place, 16 were from an NCAA D-I school.
