Department of Biology and Earth Science

Academic Advising

The university has a dual advising system, the academic advising center keeps students on track with all the requirements of their chosen degree program and departmental advisors assist students with choosing appropriate courses for their chosen career goals. The Department of Biology and Agriculture does not assign a student a faculty advisor, we allow the student to chose their advisor based on their biological interests, please check our faculty page to learn more about our faculty. In BIOL 1000 most students will usually be able to select their departmental advisor. If for some reason you are not able to select a department advisor, please come by the Biology Office in WCM 306 and we can help you in selecting an advisor.

studentIt is to your advantage to meet with your academic advisor at least once a semester and to know your advisor well. You can always count on your advisor to give you accurate and complete information about your degree requirements and refer you to the appropriate source for the information you need to be a successful student. Your advisor is knowledgeable about university policies and can help you learn to make decisions about your college experience. Your advisor can help you investigate degree programs and careers and can be of assistance to you if you experience academic difficulty. Your advisor cares about your success and about you as a person. It is your responsibility to take the lead in developing a relationship with your advisor by communicating with your advisor on a regular basis. It is recommended that you should meet with your department advisor before enrolling in courses to determine that the courses you are interested in taking are available. Sometimes schedules change and conflicts occur, so be sure to check each semester to avoid any costly errors. To assist students in tracking the courses required of their chosen degree program, the department has prepared some worksheets, they are not a substitution for regular visits with department and academic advisors. Please see the Current Student page to download a worksheet.

The College of Science and Technology Advising Center has several links that are helpful for students and has information about how to schedule an appointment with your academic advisor.
