Certification Requirements for Specific Endorsement Areas

In addition to the classes listed below, a clinical experience and the Missouri Standards for Professional Educators (MoSPE) must be met to receive educator certification.

Effective fall 2013, candidates must met the following cumulative grade point average requirements for educator certification: a 2.75 minimum cumulative grade point average overall, a 3.0 minimum cumulative grade point average in subject area classes, and a 3.0 minimum cumulative grade point average in professional education classes.

Note: If you completed a class required for certification as part of your undergraduate or advanced degree, you will be given "credit" for the class(es) during the transcript evaluation process. The numbers provided here should be considered as the maximum requirements for certification in any certification area.

Early Childhood Education B-3
Certification in early childhood education B-3 requires 86 hours of undergraduate classes.  These undergraduate classes are offered primarily during the day on campus in Warrensburg, but some classes are available online or at Central Summit Center in Lee's Summit.  

Elementary Education 1-6
Certification in elementary education 1-6 requires 69 hours of undergraduate classes.  These undergraduate classes are offered  primarily during the day on campus in Warrensburg, but some classes are available online or at Central Summit Center in Lee's Summit.  

Special Education Cross Categorical Disabilities K-12

Certification in special education cross categorical disabilities K-12 requires 70 hours of undergraduate classes.  These undergraduate classes are offered primarily during the day on campus in Warrensburg, but some classes are available online or at Central Summit Center in Lee's Summit.  

Family and Consumer Science B-12
Certification in family and consumer science B-12 requires 24 hours of professional education classes, a three hour methods of teaching class, and 34 hours in subject area undergraduate classes.

Middle School (grades 5-9)
Middle school certification areas are business, communication arts, mathematics, science, social studies, speech communicaton/theatre, and technology and engineering.  Certification in these areas require 27 hours of professional education classes, a three hour methods of teaching class, and 21 hours of subject area undergraduate classes.

High School (grades 9-12)

High school certification areas are biology, business education, chemistry, earth science, English, health education, mathematics, physics, social studies, speech and theatre, and technology education.

Certification in these areas require 24 hours of professional education classes, a three hour methods of teaching class, and subject area undergraduate classes as listed below. Some areas of certification have a two hour methods of teaching class and other areas require six hours of methods classes.
Biology - 61 hours
Business Education - 34 hours
Chemistry - 56 hours
Earth Science - 58 hours
English - 42 hours
Mathematics - 37 hours
Physics - 51 hours
Social Studies - 54 hours
Speech Communication/Theatre - 34 hours
Technology & Engineering (formerly Industrial Technology) - 47 hours

K-12 Certification
K-12 certification areas are art, French, health, library media specialist, music - instrumental and vocal, physical education and Spanish. 

Certification in these areas require 24 hours of professional education classes, a three hour methods of teaching class, and subject area undergraduate classes as listed below. Some areas of certification have a two hour methods of teaching class and other areas require six hours of methods classes.
Art - 45 hours
French - 30 hours
Health Education - 28 hours
Library Media Specialist - 33-38 hours
Music Instrumental - 57 hours 
Music Vocal - 56 hours
Physical Education - 57 hours
Spanish - 30 hours
