PCSW Sponsored Violence Prevention Training

The President's Commission on the Status of Women (PCSW) is sponsoring a violence prevention trianing at UCM on Monday, November 26 from 2:00-3:30pm in Union 240. Our facilitator will be Matt Huffman, a Program Development Specialist for the Missouri Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence. Matt will help us look at the history of violence against women and how this has impacted our social norms regarding gender violence, the gender dynamics between knowledge and power, and the bystander model as one way to change a culture as part of a comprehensive prevention plan. The desired outcome of this session is for participants to have better understanding of why violence occurs and how they can make a difference. We also will be collecting contact information for individuals who want to be engaged in ongoing conversations about violence prevention.

Here is a bio for the facilitator: Matthew Huffman joined the MCADSV staff as a Program Development Specialist with a focus on prevention work. Matthew has experience in prevention work with middle-school up to college-age students. He worked with University of Missouri–Columbia’s Relationship and Sexual Violence Prevention (RSVP) Center to revive work with men on campus. He has also organized programs promoting healthy sexuality and relationships in the LGBTQ community. He gained valuable experience at member-program True North in Columbia, first as a shelter advocate and then as a youth outreach coordinator.
