McNair Scholars Recruitment...
We are currently inviting your recommendations for the next class of McNair Scholars:
As many of you know, the goal of McNair is to prepare bright, eligible undergraduates for future study towards a Ph.D.
We need your help to identify students who will benefit most from this program.
Please take a moment to think of your current and past students who meet the following qualifications:
* Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident;
* Must be a first-generation, low-income undergraduate student OR a student underrepresented by race or ethnicity. "First-generation" means that neither parent graduated with a four-year degree before the student began college, "low-income" usually coincides with eligibility to receive a Pell grant, "underrepresented" refers to their race or ethnicity status as African American, Hispanic, American Indian, Alaskan Native, Native Hawaiian, or Native Pacific Islander;
* Must attain junior status by the end of Spring 2014 (preferably already at junior status with three or four semesters remaining); and,
* Must have academic potential and interest to succeed in graduate school. Strong GPA (3.0 or above preferred.)
As many as half of our students at UCM come from first-generation backgrounds. For these students, having a professor or other professional take an active interest in their education beyond their undergraduate degree can mean the world to them. Please speak with your students about this program, and send them over to our office in 127 Humphreys. You can also forward their names to me, and I will contact them. I've attached a recruitment flyer that you could share with your classes.
It should be noted that in recent years we have had more applicants than we were funded to serve, and as always, we rely heavily on your recommendations in the highly competitive selection process.
Students must interview with me prior to receiving an application, which must be completed by noon on October 28, so a quick response is appreciated.
Your input is invaluable to us.
Thank you in advance,
