UCM Honors Smith with Retirement Reception
Michael Smith, director of procurement and materials management, has announced his retirement. He will be leaving his position May 31, after devoting more than 28 years to the university. In honor of his service, the UCM community is invited to attend a retirement reception at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 22 in Elliott Union 237A.
Smith joined UCM in 1985. His first role was carpenter helper and six months later he became truck driver and inventory control clerk. In October 1986, Smith's role again changed to purchasing agent and in September 2008 he was promoted to assistant director of procurement. On two occasions, he served as interim director, and in July 2011 Smith was named director of procurement and materials management.
Smith became a member of the Missouri Association of Public Purchasing (MAPP) and of the National Institute for Governmental Purchasing (NIGP) on April 13, 1989. He was recognized as the "Purchasing Buyer of the Year in 1997" for the Missouri Association of Public Purchasing and twice received recognition as the university's "Employee of the Quarter."
"Mike has always been a great representative of UCM," said Vice President and Chief Financial Officer John Merrigan. "We appreciate his many years of hard work and dedication to the university and wish him a very happy retirement."
