Explanation of Internet Outage Overnight Monday
UCM lost all Internet connectivity at approximately 12:05 a.m. May 7. Service was restored a little after 5 a.m. Tuesday morning.
The early morning Internet outage was caused by a MOREnet sub-contractor conducting maintenance on fiber optic cable that was not communicated to MOREnet, and hence not communicated to UCM. The service outage was further compounded by an equipment failure experienced by that connectivity provider during their work, extending what should have been a two-hour job into a five-hour job.
The Office of Technology works hard to avoid system maintenance during Finals Week. We are having discussions with MOREnet about this incident. We apologize for the inconvenience to our user community.
