Summer Enhancement Programs
Summer Bridge Program
The UCM Summer Bridge Program is a three-week residential college experience for Kansas City metro high school students who will be entering their sophomore year. The program started in summer 2004 as a partnership with the Kansas City Missouri School District. In summer 2007, the Hickman Mills School District was added to the program. The purpose of the program is to enhance college readiness skills and knowledge and to provide a positive first-hand experience on a university campus. The program provides opportunity for students to explore potential careers; take courses focused on science, math, literacy, technology and college preparedness; along with field trips related to academic studies.
Students completing the initial three-week Summer Bridge Program are provided the opportunity to return to the University of Central Missouri campus each summer during the remainder of their high school career to participate in a portion of the Summer Bridge Program. In addition to the summer program, UCM continues ongoing communication with the Summer Bridge Program students throughout their high school career by inviting them to various campus programs (i.e. Homecoming, Freedom Scholarship Dinner, and Ballet Folklorico) and through their UCM faculty/staff mentor, which the students are paired with during their initial three-week program.
Aviation Youth Summer Camp
The Aviation Youth Summer Camp is a one-week summer camp focused on introducing multicultural and under-represented students to the field of aviation, primarily through hands-on activities and exposure to aeronautical science and a flight experience. Aviation Youth Summer Camp is a residential camp taught by UCM aviation faculty and certified flight instructors. The camp fosters the development of leadership, character, physical health and academic achievement through hands-on activities, motivational speakers, team building exercises, diversity training and exposure to a university environment, academic programs and the university experience.
Camp participants work to achieve their camp goals in collaboration with experts in the field of aviation, as well as the UCM aviation department staff. Each student leaves the camp with information pertaining to what is recommended for a high school curriculum to prepare for an aviation major at the college level, as well as information on the application process for college, scholarships and financial aid.
Kauffman Scholars Summer Enrichment Institute
Kauffman Scholars Residential Summer Institute is a partnership between Kauffman Scholars, Inc. and the University of Central Missouri to provide a summer program for students enrolled in the Kauffman Scholars, Inc. Program. The Kauffman Scholars, Inc. provides college preparatory programming for students selected from the Greater Kansas City area in the seventh grade and continues preparing them to graduate from high school and to enter and complete college. KSI finances the college education of their successful students.
This summer camp on the UCM campus exposes the students to real college experiences through housing, residence hall meals, classroom experiences with college professors and actually being on campus when UCM students are enrolled in classes.
