MINUTES

The meeting was called to order by Dr. Jeffrey Yelton, Chair, with the following members present:  Ms. Ruthann Williams, Ms. Joanne Reinke, Ms. Kelly Edmondson, Dr. Dan Schierenbeck, Dr. Qingxiong Ma, Dr. Peter Viscusi and Ms. Traci Butler, Secretary.

Approval of Minutes

Dr. Yelton asked the committee if there were any questions or comments on the March 30, 2006 minutes.  Ms. Williams asked that the fifth sentence in the first paragraph under Approval of Minutes be changed to read, “A question was asked as to the purpose of the test and Ms. Williams said there currently is not a nationally normed college entrance with a technology component test.”

In addition, the following corrections will be made to the March 30, 2006 minutes.

Ms. Reinke moved to accept the March 30, 2006 minutes as amended and since there were no additional questions or comments, the minutes were approved as amended.

The committee discussed whether to elect a new chair now or the next meeting, and they decided that now would be better.  Ms. Williams nominated Dr. Schierenbeck, and Ms. Reinke moved to accept the nomination.  Since there were no other nominations or discussion, Dr. Schierenbeck was elected by acclamation to be the new committee chair.

A discussion was held regarding IC3 and ICT testing, and Ms. Williams said there would be a dry run of the IC3 test this summer in the BE&O 1210 course.

Dr. Yelton mentioned that at the Faculty Senate University Assessment Committee on April 13, 2006, there was further discussion of developing alternative assessments for those who had not passed the CBASE exam. Our  new committee chair is the FS General Education representative at the FSUAC meetings.

At the previous Gen Ed meeting, the committee had approved IGEN 4231, provided that the Department of History and Anthropology seek the Committee’s approval of changing the course title from “Myth, Memory, and American Realities” to “Myth, Memory, and Realities.” Dr. Yelton reported that he had checked back through the paperwork, and that the Gen Ed committee had approved the title change early in 2002. The correct title does appear in the catalog, in the Departmental section, but the older name remains in the General Education section. Dr. Yelton gave Dr. Viscusi a copy of the course revision form, which had been signed by Dr. Renee Cole.

Old Business

Course Reviews

ICAP 4110

Dr. Ma mentioned there was no linkage between what they say they are doing and how they are assessing. Since Dr. Jackson, the other reviewer, was not present, the course was tabled until the May meeting.

ICAP 4111

Dr. Yelton said that he had questions about the course and since Dr. Wallace was not in attendance, this course will be reviewed at a future meeting.

ICAP 4357

Ms. Edmondson and Dr. Ma reviewed the course.  Skill area headings and competencies on the syllabus are unclear.  Skill and knowledge areas are not matched on the syllabus.  Assessments and competencies are not sufficient.  Simulation is mentioned, but an example is not provided.  Primary skill and knowledge areas are the same and it is apparent they are not using our terminology.  Integrative studies competencies are needed along with an explanation of assignments.  If it is going to be in General Education, it needs to be related.  If they require admittance to BSBA then it is not open to General Education.

ICAP 4112

Ms. Williams noted the course title was not on the syllabus.  Questions 5 and 6 did not provide a brief explanation and there were no Integrative Studies.  Primary competencies 1, 2, 3 and 6 were claimed on Question 3 and 2 and 6 were not applicable, but primary competency 4 appeared to be, but was not listed.  There is an overall confusion of usage and terminology of primary competencies.  The program objective is listed along with the course objective.  PR&T 4112 was mentioned at one point instead of ICAP 4112.  The syllabus also mentions graduate students but they are not eligible to take an ICAP course.

Ms. Edmondson will provide a copy of her comments to Dr. Yelton and he will pass them on to the instructor.   Dr. Yelton will also let the instructor know that Ms. Edmondson is willing to meet with him.

Discussion Items

Our next scheduled meeting will be a transition meeting between the past and present committee members on May 15, 2006.  It will be in UN 123 from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm and lunch will be served.

The meeting was then adjourned.

Respectfully Submitted,

Traci Butler, Secretary
