Department of Communication and Sociology

Students may apply for multiple scholarships. Most applications for the 2014-2015 academic year must be completed and submitted via online by March 1, 2014.  Be sure to check below for scholarships that have an application deadline other than March 1.

Name of Scholarship To apply, a student must:
Department of Communication  
Maurine Poage Achauer Scholarship
  • be a full-time undergraduate student in good academic standing at UCM
  • be an active participant in the UCM debate program
  • show promise of leadership and academic ability in the field of debate
  • be worthy, deserving and of good moral character
Susan and Steven Beebe Debate Scholarship
  • be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in good academic standing at UCM
  • be pursuing a major or minor within the Department of Communication
  • be involved in the forensics program at UCM
  • have a minimum overall cumulative GPA of 3.0
John Bradley Public Broadcasting Scholarship
  • be a part-time or full-time junior or senior student in good academic standing at UCM (however, if no junior or senior students apply or are deemed eligible, other students shall be considered)
  • be working as a volunteer or paid assistant at KMOS-TV or KTGB-FM
  • exhibit dependable and valuable service to KMOS-TV or KTGB-FM
  • be worthy, deserving and of good moral character
  • demonstrate leadership and academic ability in the field of public broadcasting
Bryan '72 and Valerie Burns Scholarship
  • be an undergraduate student in good academic standing at UCM
  • be pursuing a degree in the Department of Communication (excludes two programs: Speech Communication & Education and Speech Communication & Theatre)
  • have a minimum overall cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • demonstrate financial need
  • recipient will be offered a paid student staff position within the Department of Athletics
The Carnegians and Dale Carnegie Scholarship
  • be an incoming freshman student, accepted to UCM or a current undergraduate or graduate student in good academic standing at UCM
  • be (or plan to be) a full-time student
  • be pursuing (or plan to pursue) a degree in communication studies
  • demonstrate good character, leadership and service
  • demonstrate financial need
Berniece Craig Scholarship in Forensics
  • be a full-time undergraduate student in good academic standing at UCM
  • be actively participating in the forensics program at UCM
  • be worthy, deserving and of good moral character
  • show promise of leadership and academic ability in his/her chosen field
  • have a minimum overall cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • have a minimum of 2 semesters experience in any aspect of the forensics program (i.e. forensics and/or individualized events)
Bonnie Cunningham Scholarship
  • be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in good academic standing at UCM
  • show promise of leadership, academic ability and professional potential in the field of print journalism
  • be worthy, deserving and of good moral character
  • have completed a minimum of 60 credit hours of undergraduate coursework
  • have a minimum overall cumulative GPA of 3.25
Curtis, Hartley, Parnell and Wheeler Campus Leadership Award
  • be pursuing a degree in communication at UCM
  • demonstrate outstanding service and/or performance within the Department of Communication
David L. Eshelman Memorial Scholarship
  • be a full-time sophomore, junior, senior or graduate student at UCM
  • be pursuing a degree in mass communication and be committed to a career in the field of mass communication
  • show promise of leadership and academic ability in the field of mass communication
  • be worthy, deserving and of good moral character
  • have a minimum overall cumulative GPA of 3.5 (for undergraduate students) or a 3.6 (for graduate students)
Jeffrey Floyd Forensic Scholarship (for incoming freshmen students)
  • be a graduating high school senior and be accepted to UCM
  • plan to pursue a major or minor in communication studies
  • be an active participant in the forensics program in high school
  • demonstrate outstanding contribution, performance, scholarship and leadership in forensic activities in high school
Jeffrey Floyd Forensic Scholarship
  • be a full-time undergraduate student at UCM
  • be pursuing a major or minor in communication studies
  • be an active participant in the forensics program at UCM
  • demonstrate outstanding forensic contributions at UCM
  • demonstrate outstanding performance, scholarship and leadership in forensic activities at UCM
Dr. Harold L. Lawson Scholarship
  • be a full-time student in good academic standing at UCM
  • have completed a minimum of 24 credit hours
  • be active in the intercollegiate forensics program at UCM (preference given to students competing in debate)
  • be worthy, deserving and of good moral character
  • show promise of leadership, dedication and academic ability in the field of forensics and debate
Joseph Ezra Roop Memorial Scholarship (for incoming freshmen students)
  • be an incoming freshman student and be accepted to UCM
  • have a minimum overall cumulative high school GPA of 3.25 on a 4.0 scale
  • show interest in journalism or genealogy
  • demonstrate financial need
Joseph Ezra Roop Memorial Scholarship
  • be a full-time undergraduate student in good academic standing at UCM
  • show interest in journalism or genealogy
  • have a minimum overall cumulative GPA of 3.25
  • demonstrate financial need
Melissa M. Wyatt Memorial Scholarship
  • be a full-time junior or senior student in good academic standing at UCM
  • be pursuing a degree in public relations
  • be worthy, deserving and of good moral character
  • show promise of leadership and academic ability
Department of Sociology  
Dr. Billy Hu Sociology and Social Gerontology Scholarship
  • a student must be a full-time, graduate student at UCM in good academic standing and:

  • must be pursuing a MA in Sociology or MS in Social Gerontology

  • must be an international student

  • must demonstrate good character, leadership and service  

C. James Britton Scholarship
  • be a full-time student at UCM the following academic year;
  • be pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree within the Department of Sociology and Social Work;
  • have earned a minimum of 90 semester credit hours (if an undergraduate student) by the end of the semester in which application is submitted, or;
  • have earned a minimum of 9 semester credit hours (if a graduate student) and have a minimum overall cumulative GPA of 3.75 in all coursework completed by the end of the semester in which application is submitted;
  • demonstrate good character, leadership and service.
