Department of Music

Students may apply for multiple scholarships. Most applications for the 2014-2015 academic year must be completed and submitted by March 1, 2014.  Be sure to check below for scholarships that have an application deadline other than March 1.  Some scholarships within the Department of Music may require an audition or be specific to a position. Please contact the Department of Music for specific details about audition times at www.ucmo.edu/music

Name of Scholarship To apply, a student must:
Glenn A. Bixby Memorial Scholarship
  • be a full-time sophomore, junior or senior student in good academic standing at UCM
  • be pursuing a degree in music education
  • be worthy, deserving and of good moral character
  • show promise of leadership and academic ability in the field of music education
  • preference shall be given to graduates of Holden High School in Holden, MO
John William "Blind" Boone Scholarship in Music
  • be a full-time senior student in good academic standing at UCM
  • be pursuing a degree in music education
  • have graduated from a high school, home school or received GED in Cass, Henry, Jackson, Lafayette, or Pettis counties in Missouri
  • have major emphasis in piano performance; second preference shall be given to a student whose major emphasis is saxophone performance; third preference shall be given to students pursuing a degree in music performance
  • have a minimum overall GPA of 2.5
Edith M. Brooks Scholarship in Music
  • be a junior, senior or graduate student in good academic standing at UCM
  • be pursuing a degree in music education or organ music
  • demonstrate good character, leadership and service
  • have a minimum GPA of 3.0 in major (if an undergraduate student)
James H. and Doris J. Dickinson Scholarship in French Horn and Guitar
  • be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in good academic standing at UCM
  • be pursuing a major in French horn or guitar
  • participate in an ensemble
  • demonstrate financial need
Paul E. and Marjorie C. Carson Music Scholarship
  • be a full-time student in good academic standing at UCM or be accepted to attend UCM
  • be worthy, deserving and of good moral character
  • show promise of leadership and academic ability in the field of instrumental music
  • preference shall be given to an incoming freshman student (however, if no freshman students are deemed eligible, current UCM students meeting criteria may be considered)
Conan and Patricia Castle Vocal Music Scholarship
  • be a sophomore, junior or senior student in good academic standing at UCM
  • be pursuing a degree in music majoring in vocal music education and/or vocal performance
  • demonstrate good character, outstanding singing potential, excellent musicianship, a commitment to service, a record of proven academic ability and the promise of leadership in the field of music
Russell and Alice Coleman Clarinet Scholarship
  • be a full-time undergraduate student in good academic standing at UCM
  • be designated principal clarinetist in the University's top concert band by the Faculty Audition Committee of the Department of Music
  • be worthy, deserving and of good moral character
  • show promise of leadership and academic ability
Marion B. Davies Memorial Scholarship
  • be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in good academic standing at UCM
  • be pursuing a music major or degree in music whose primary performance instrument is piano
  • demonstrate dedication to the piano as his/her major instrument, a strong work ethic, music talent and achievement
  • be enrolled in piano lessons at UCM
Don Essig Memorial Scholarship
  • be a full-time student in good academic standing at UCM or be accepted to attend UCM
  • be pursuing a degree in music
  • be worthy, deserving and of good moral character
  • show promise of leadership and academic ability in the field of instrumental music
  • be a member of the UCM Marching Band
Frank and Barbara Fendorf Scholarship in Music
  • be accepted to UCM and plan to pursue a degree in music
  • be worthy, deserving and of good moral character
  • show promise of leadership and academic ability in the field of instrumental music
  • have been accepted as a member of the UCM band or orchestra
  • have a minimum high school GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • have a primary performance instrument of brass, woodwind or percussion (secondary consideration shall be given to string performers)
Dr. Jon Ferguson Music Scholarship
  • be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in good academic standing at UCM
  • demonstrate good character, outstanding singing or conducting potential, excellent musicianship, a commitment to service, a record of proven academic ability, and the promise of leadership in the field of music
  • be an active participant in the field of music
  • be enrolled in voice lessons
Dr. Milton H. Genge Memorial Scholarship
  • be a full-time senior student in good academic standing at UCM
  • be pursuing a degree in music education
  • demonstrate good character, leadership and service
  • scholarship is to be used during semester of student teaching
Walter J. Halen Scholarship for String Students
  • be a full-time student in good academic standing at UCM or be accepted to attend UCM
  • play the violin, viola, cello or string bass
  • show potential for becoming a good performer and/or teacher
  • play/perform in the University orchestra at UCM
Ralph and Ethel Hart Scholarship
  • be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in good academic standing at UCM
  • be pursuing a B.M., B.M.E., or M.M. or M.A. of music majoring in vocal performance
  • have a minimum overall cumulative GPA of 3.0

Joan Hubbel Scholarship in Music

  • be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in good academic standing at UCM
  • be pursuing a degree in music with an emphasis in piano or organ (however, if no students pursuing a degree in music with an emphasis in piano or organ apply or are deemed eligible, consideration shall be given to other students pursuing a degree in music)
  • demonstrate good character, leadership and service
  • demonstrate financial need
Keisker Family Scholarship
  • be a full-time senior student in good academic standing at UCM
  • be pursuing a degree in music education
  • have a minimum overall cumulative GPA of 2.5 and a minimum GPA of 2.5 in major
  • be worthy, deserving and of good moral character
  • show promise of leadership and academic ability in the field of music education
  • scholarship is to be used during the semester of student teaching
Franklin W. and Janice P. Koch Scholarship in Music
  • be a full-time junior or senior student in good academic standing at UCM
  • be pursuing a Bachelor of Music Education degree
  • demonstrate high levels of musicality and performance skill
  • demonstrate high levels of character and personal qualities
  • have completed a minimum of 60 credit hours
  • have successfully passed sophomore examinations
  • have gained full admission to the teacher education program
  • have a minimum overall cumulative GPA of 3.0 and a minimum GPA of 3.5 in music
Ernestine Thomson Logan Violin Scholarship
  • be a full-time student in good academic standing at UCM or be accepted to attend UCM
  • be pursuing or plan to pursue a degree in music with an emphasis in violin
Marching Mules Alumni Band Scholarship
  • be a full-time undergraduate student in good academic standing at UCM
  • have exhibited exceptional service, leadership and musicianship as a current member of the UCM Marching Band
  • be worthy, deserving and of good moral character
  • show promise of leadership and academic ability
McAdams-Vaughan Tuba Achievement Award
  • be a tuba/euphonium student entering his/her junior or senior year;
  • demonstrate excellence in performance and academics; musicianship, potential and accomplishments will be considered
Granville Moss Memorial Scholarship
  • be a full-time undergraduate student in good academic standing at UCM
  • be pursuing a degree in music with an emphasis in studying the trumpet for either pedagogy or performance
  • be a resident of the state of Missouri (however, if no Missouri residents apply or are deemed eligible, all other students meeting the criteria may be considered)
  • be deserving, of good moral character and show promise of academic ability
  • have a minimum overall cumulative GPA of 2.75
Erkalene McCormack Ousley Perpetual Scholarship
  • be a full-time student in good academic standing at UCM
  • be pursuing a degree in music
  • be worthy, deserving and of good moral character
  • show promise of leadership and academic ability in the field of music, either piano or voice
  • be enrolled in either voice or piano lessons
Douglas E. Padget Principal Trumpet Chair Scholarship
  • be a full-time student in good academic standing at UCM
  • be designated first cornet/trumpet chair in the University Concert Band
  • demonstrate good character, leadership and service
Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Scholarship
  • be a full-time junior, senior or graduate student in good academic standing at UCM
  • be pursuing a degree in music
  • have a minimum overall cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • show promise of leadership and service
Nedra Eickler Prock Memorial Saxophone Scholarship
  • be a full-time undergraduate student in good academic standing at UCM
  • be the designated alto saxophone chair in the University Concert Band
  • demonstrate good character, leadership and service
Rita Resch Vocal Studies Scholarship (for undergraduate students)
  • be a junior or senior student in good academic standing at UCM
  • be pursuing a music major with vocal emphasis
  • be enrolled in the BM, BME or BA degree program
  • demonstrate good character, outstanding singing potential, excellent musicianship, a commitment to service (specifically as a member of a choral group or opera theatre in the same semester the scholarship is applied)
  • demonstrate a proven record of academic ability and leadership in the field of music
Rita Resch Vocal Studies Scholarship (for graduate students)
  • be a graduate student in good academic standing at UCM
  • be pursuing a graduate voice major
  • be enrolled in the MA degree program
  • demonstrate good character, outstanding singing potential, excellent musicianship, a commitment to service (specifically as a member of a choral group or opera theatre in the same semester the scholarship is applied)
  • demonstrate a proven record of academic ability and leadership in the field of music
Ellsworth and Marcella Shomshor Trumpet Scholarship
  • be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in good academic standing at UCM
  • be pursuing a degree in music
  • play trumpet as primary applied instrument
  • maintain a minimum overall cumulative GPA o f3.0
Dr. Robert G. and Sarah W. Schwartz Scholarship in Music
  • be a full- or part-time undergraduate or graduate student in good academic standing at UCM
  • be pursuing a degree in the Department of Music
  • have a minimum overall cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • demonstrate financial need
Claude T. and Maureen Smith Music Scholarship
  • be a full-time sophomore, junior or senior student in good academic standing at UCM
  • be pursuing a major in music
  • be pursuing a career in music and show interest in music education, composition, conducting or the French Horn
  • show promise of leadership and service
Eleanor B. Shockey Vocal Music Scholarship
  • be a full-time sophomore, junior or senior student in good academic standing at UCM
  • be pursuing a major or minor in vocal music
  • be an active participant in the vocal music program within the Department of Music
David L. Stagg Trombone Scholarship
  • be a full-time student in good academic standing at UCM
  • be worthy, deserving and show promise of leadership and ability in the field of music
  • be enrolled in applied trombone lessons at UCM
  • be participating in one of the following ensembles within the Department of Music: a Jazz Emsemble, a Concert Band, the Marching Band or the University Symphony
Dr. Robert Stewart C-MENC Scholarship
  • be a full-time student in good academic standing at UCM
  • be pursuing a major in music education
  • have a minimum overall cumulative GPA of 2.5
  • be an active, participating member of C-MENC Chapter #169
  • have been a member of C-MENC for at least one semester
  • submit a 500-word statement on a topic to be determined annually by the Executive Board of C-MENC
UCM Wind Ensemble Principal Percussionist Scholarship
  • be a full time, undergraduate or graduate student in good academic standing;
  • be selected, by audition, as the UCM Wind Ensemble Principal Percussionist
Hugh B. and Phyllis E. Williams Scholarship
  • be a full-time student in good academic standing at UCM
  • be designated the concertmaster in the University Symphony Orchestra
  • demonstrate good character, leadership and service
