Your Roadmap for Success

Welcome to UCM! We want you to succeed from the start and that is why we have created a First-Year Experience (FYE) program.  The FYE program is comprised of three essential components: Orientation and Enrollment, Week of Welcome, and a FYE Seminar.  These three components work together to help you achieve your goals.  To view the mission and goals we have developed for the FYE program, click here.

FYE focuses on giving first-year students the resources and support needed to successfully transition into college.  A powerful way to experience FYE is through participation in a learning community.   Learning Communities consist of groups of students in linked or paired courses.  These courses will introduce students to different disciplines offered at UCM and more importantly, will provide students with a social network that is critical to success.  Nationwide research clearly indicates that students who participate in learning communities are more likely to succeed in college.

Phase I: Orientation and Enrollment
Orientation and Enrollment is a one-day required program designed specifically for you and your family.  You will become acquainted with academic and co-curricular activities at UCM, meet with academic advisors to complete your fall course schedule and complete vital procedural details, such as housing and financial aid. Orientation and Enrollment is your first step to First Year Success!

A special track has also been designed specifically for parents to learn more about UCM.

Phase II: Week of Welcome
Week of Welcome (WOW) is a six-day program designed to build connections between first-year students and the UCM community.  WOW is a great way to get acclimated to UCM before the semester officially kicks off on Wednesday.  You will move in on Sunday, attend interest sessions, hear speakers and enjoy both entertainment and social activities.  Don't miss out on all the fun.  To learn more...

Phase III: FYE Seminar
Join other incoming students in a special course designed specifically for your first semester at UCM.  Freshman Seminar gives first-year students a shared opportunity to make the academic and social transition to UCM.  Activities and programs are designed for you to learn more about UCM and the community.  Students receive ongoing guidance from their own Freshman Seminar student mentor and the UCM faculty member who facilitate this unique (1-2) credit hour experience.

  • The Freshman Seminar is limited to no more than 30 students per seminar
  • Small group communities are purposefully incorporated into the Freshman Seminar Experience
  • Freshman Seminar serves as the anchor for the learning communities

What can you expect from the Freshman Seminar course?

  • Developing meaningful connections
  • Achieving your goals
  • Getting to know the campus
  • Learning how to be successful at UCM
