The Department of Music Mission Statement:
The Department of Music fosters artistic excellence through scholarship, teaching, and performance; serving as a center of artistic inquiry, leadership, and collaboration.
In fulfillment of its mission, the Department of Music:
- Advocates music as an essential element of human experience.
- Prepares students for careers and further study in music.
- Serves as a leader in music education, while offering distinctive programs in music technology, Kodaly certification, jazz/commercial music, and piano pedagogy.
- Encourages creative and reflective thinking through its support of the General Education program.

| Bachelor of Arts |
The graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in music will use the knowledge and skills obtained in the program to:
- Understand the basic elements and structures of music history, theory, and performance literature.
- Understand music's relationship to the other arts, and how the arts relate to mankind.
- Perform with appropriate tone, technique, and musicality in his/her primary performance medium.
- Use technology in appropriate music applications.
- Communicate the intellectual (thinking), emotional, and aesthetic (valuing) qualities of music to a diverse society. TOP

The graduate with a Bachelor of Music degree will use the knowledge and skills obtained in the program to:
- Perform at the highest possible level in his/her primary performance medium.
- Understand the basic elements and structures of music history, theory, and performance literature.
- Teach essential elements of music and music performance.
- Demonstrate functional piano performance skills.
- Understand music's relationship to the other arts, and how the arts relate to mankind.
- Use technology in appropriate music applications.
- Communicate the intellectual (thinking), emotional, and aesthetic (valuing) qualities of music to a diverse society. TOP

- Teach essential elements of music and music performance at elementary and secondary school levels.
- Understand the basic elements and structures of music history, theory, and performance literature.
- Perform with appropriate tone, technique, and musicality in his/her primary performance medium.
- Demonstrate functional piano performance skills.
- Understand music's relationship to the other arts, and how the arts relate to mankind.
- Use technology in appropriate music applications.
Communicate the intellectual (thinking), emotional, and aesthetic (valuing) qualities of music to a diverse society. TOP

The graduate with a Master of Arts in Music degree (all emphases) will use the knowledge and skills obtained in the program to:
- Understand and apply advanced elements and structures of music history, theory, and performance literature.
- Engage in research (analysis, interpretation, and reporting of data) within his/her area of emphasis.
- Demonstrate at an advanced level a mastery of tone, technique, and musicality in his/her primary performance medium. TOP

The Department of Music utilizes a variety of assessment tools in collecting data regarding student outcomes. Data are examined in an effort to provide feedback to the faculty to improve the teaching and learning process. The following are assessment tools used for baccalaureate degree students in music:
- applied lesson juries
- sophomore examination
- classroom examinations
- piano proficiency examination
- theory entrance examination
- Major Field Achievement Test (national standardized test)
- Senior Satisfaction Survey
- Graduate Survey
- Students in the Bachelor of Music Education (B.M.E.) degree must also
- take the National Teachers Exam. TOP
