FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

We've tried to provide answers to many of the most common questions asked both by campers and students, but if there is anything at all that we've missed, please contact us at your convenience.

HOW MUCH DOES THE CAMP COST?

Resident Camper Fee: $400 - Includes shared room; all meals; all camp ensembles and classes, and camp t-shirt
Commuter Camper Few: $200 - Includes all camp ensembles and classes, and camp t-shirt (commuter meal plan is available for an additional $100 fee)
Private Lessons: $30 - Students receive two 30-minute private lessons for $25. Students may sign-up for four lessons on two DIFFERENT instruments (or voice) at a cost of $50).

HOW MANY PERFORMING GROUPS ARE THERE AT THE CAMP?
  • 2 Concert Bands (Honor Band and Symphonic Band)
  • 2 Jazz Bands (Studio and Lab Jazz Bands)
  • Mixed Concert Choir (Castle Chorale)
  • Women’s Choir (Hart Singers)
  • Mixed Show Choir (Grace Notes)
  • Symphony Orchestra

HOW OFTEN DO THE ENSEMBLES REHEARSE?

Each major ensemble has two full rehearsals and one sectional rehearsal daily.

MAY I BE IN MORE THAN ONE ENSEMBLE?

ABSOLUTELY! Many Campers participate in a variety of ensembles. All students have the opportunity to perform in a concert band and/or concert choir. Chair placement in the bands and membership in other small ensembles are determined by ensemble personnel requirements and placement auditions. NOTE: 7th GRADE WW, BRASS & PERCUSSIONISTS ARE ASSIGNED TO the SYMPHONIC BAND.

Students in the JAZZ/ROCK ACADEMY will be limited to participation in one (1) large ensemble, and no more than one (1) additional small ensemble.

WHO DIRECTS THE SECTIONAL REHEARSALS?
UCM Music Faculty and music educators who are specialists in their instrument or voice.

ARE THERE OTHER MUSIC OPPORTUNITIES AT THE CAMP?

YES! Enrichment courses are offered at no additional charge. Most students will participate in a couple of ensembles and one enrichment course. Enrichment options include:

  • Music Technology: digital notation, audio recording, etc.
  • Music Theory: beginning or intermediate (Fundamentals of notation, music composition)
  • Conducting: beginning or intermediate
  • Music Appreciation: Becoming familiar with great music and learning to develop a critical and discriminating ear
  • Jazz/Rock Academy: Students can be assigned to jazz combos and rock bands, learning how to begin a band of their own, rehearse, perform!, and even record and market!
PLEASE NOTE: The newly expanded Jazz/Rock Academy (JRA) will itself involve a more robust schedule than the other enrichment offerings, so students enrolling in JRA may need to limit their ensemble participation to only 1 or 2 ensembles.

ARE PRIVATE LESSONS AVAILABLE?
Lessons are available on voice, piano, organ, classical guitar and all band and orchestra instruments. Two half-hour lessons will be taught by UCM Music Faculty or area specialists. An additional fee of $30 is required. Students may also enroll for 4 half hour-lessons ($60) but doing so requires that they be in two different lesson areas. You will need to bring music with you.

WHAT ABOUT AUDITIONS?
Placement auditions are early Sunday afternoon, June 9. Mailings to registered campers will begin in late March or early April, but audition music is only available in .pdf format for download via the camp web pages. Vocal auditions will consist of vocalizing scales, singing "My Country tis of Thee" and simple sight reading patterns.

WHERE WILL I STAY DURING CAMP?
Campers and counselors will be housed in UCM's air-conditioned South Yeater Residence Hall, located on-campus, and near the university's recreation and dining facilities. Meals will be served in Todd Hall's "West End Market" Dining Hall (connected building). Boys and girls will stay in the same building, but will be housed on separate floors.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING?
Bring your own BEDDING, instrument, toiletry articles, sports equipment, etc. Complete information is sent home after your application has been received.

WHEN DO I ARRIVE AND WHEN DO I LEAVE?
Registration will from 10:00 AM - Noon on Sunday morning, June 9. The camp closes with the final concerts on Friday evening, June 14.

WHAT ABOUT ROOMMATES?
You may request a specific roommate and/or suite-mates on the application form. If you do not name one, you will be placed in a room with someone your own age. (Roommate requests must be received by June 4).

ARE THERE COUNELORS ASSIGNED TO THE DORMS?
Yes, we have an excellent staff of counselors who live in the residence hall with the campers. These include middle school and high school music teachers, and select collegiate staffers.

WHAT CAN WE DO FOR FUN AND RECREATION?
The swimming pool in the UCM Multipurpose Building (swimming, raquetball, etc.) is open each afternoon, Monday-Thursday until 4:00 p.m. and each evening from 5:30 until 6:30. There is a $1.00 per visit usage fee. Most university facilities (tennis courts, etc.) are available to Campers. The Union is open daily (bowling, table tennis, etc. requires a small fee), and UCM's brand new state-of-the-art recreation center and cafe will also be open daily, just adjacent to the Utt Music Building.

WHAT GOES ON IN THE EVENINGS?

You'll be Busy Every Night!
