Music Degree Admissions Policy

GENERAL
All entering freshmen shall meet the academic standards required by the university for admission as stated in the Undergraduate Catalog.

Every student, regardless of music degree program, will declare a primary area of applied study (lessons on an instrument or voice).

To determine musicianship on an instrument or in voice, all students applying (new or transfer) will perform an audition. Each performance area will determine the specific components of the audition.

Using the information collected from the Application and Scholarship Audition Form, and the quality of the performance audition, the applied instructor and/or area coordinator will rate each student performance in their declared primary area as:

Admitted: Student is ready to begin university level private lesson instruction.
Not Admitted: Student lacks the background to enroll in private lesson study at the university level. Not admitted students are encouraged to seek private instruction off campus and reaudition at a later date.

To determine general musicianship, all entering freshmen shall take the Music Fundamentals Examination on the same day as their performance audition. Similar to the performance audition rating, the examination will determine the student's status as:

Admitted: Student is ready to begin Music Theory I and Aural Training I.
Not Admitted: Student lacks the general music background to pursue a music degree at UCM. Not admitted students are encouraged to take advantage of the vast array of on line music theory tutoring programs, in order to retake the Music Fundamentals Examination at a later date.
