The third annual UCM New Music Festival will be held in conjunction with the Society of Composers, Inc. 2011 Region VI Conference, April 8-10, 2011 at the University of Central Missouri. Scores will be accepted from all composers. However, members of SCI will receive preference in the selection process, and several of the concerts will be restricted to works by SCI members only. Submissions from composers who can supply their own performers are encouraged. Electronic, electroacoustic, acousmatic, and multimedia works are also strongly encouraged (maximum 8.1 format + optional video; see below for list of available technology). Papers and panel sessions on topics related to music since 1945 will be accepted for presentation at the conference. Please see the Call for Papers below.
All performances will be recorded. Composers will receive a recording of their works during or after the conference. In addition, festival proceedings will be streamed live on the Internet this year.
Attendance at the conference is expected of all scholars and composers whose work is selected. We believe strongly in building a community of composers, scholars, and performers through the course of the festival. Further, collegial interaction between the UCM music community and our esteemed visitors is one of the primary goals of this festival. However, as active teachers, scholars, and artists ourselves, we understand that composers can only attend so many conferences and/or festivals in any given year. Thus, we ask each composer to provide a statement about whether or not he or she will commit to attend the festival if selected. Composers who have committed to attend if selected will receive priority in the selection process, but all submitted scores will be considered for programming. In general, scholars selected for the festival must attend to present their work. However, we will be willing to explore technological solutions in special cases (e.g. live video streaming for scholars from other countries).

Athens Saxophone Quartet
This year, the UCM New Music Festival is pleased to welcome the Athens Saxophone Quartet as our featured guests. The quartet specializes in contemporary music and includes two composers. As part of this year's call for scores, we will accept proposals for works to be performed by members of the quartet.
The ensemble is interested in considering works for the following ensembles:
Saxophone solos, duos, trios, or quartets (multiple soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone saxophones available in any combination)
Saxophone quartet plus electronics
Saxophone quartet plus other acoustic instrument (chosen from the list of UCM Performers below)
To be considered for performance by the Athens Saxophone Quartet, works must be for one of the ensemble variations listed above; works incorporating more than one saxophone are preferred. Please note: scores involving percussion should use instruments that are either listed in our available percussion or easily constructable. Please contact Eric Honour with any questions about percussion instrument availability before submitting the work for consideration.
We are also pleased to welcome KCContinuum as one of our featured guests. One of the newest additions to the contemporary music scene in Kansas City, KCContinuum is already establishing itself as an outstanding ensemble, presenting innovative and varied programs by living composers. Composers may submit scores for consideration by KCContinuum. The ensemble's instrumentation (one player per part, no doublings) is:
The ensemble prefers to consider scores for two or more performers, up to the full ensemble, that do not require a conductor.

Please note: we are unable to consider scores for string quartet this year. For strings, we have a maximum of one violin (OR viola) available, no violoncello or bass (except in KCContinuum above).

Selections will be made by the ensemble directors and performers, in coordination with the conference host. Difficulty level and available rehearsal time will be a factor in all selection decisions. Selected composers will be notified on or about January 31, 2011.
Selected composers must provide all required performance materials. The University of Central Missouri will not pay rental costs.
This year marks the third annual new music festival at the University of Central Missouri. This year, the Athens Saxophone Quartet are our featured guests. This ensemble is committed to playing the most contemporary music available, but is based in Greece, the ancient home of Western Civilization. Thus, we have decided to organize the festival around the theme of Old and New.
Many composers throughout history have been inspired by old music as they create their new constructions in sound. The Neo-Classical and Neo-Romantic movements of the mid- and late-Twentieth Century clearly drew upon the idea of old informing new, and the influence of Renaissance composers Machaut and Ockeghem on such modern luminaries as Sir Harrison Birtwistle is well-established. In the field of music technology, despite ongoing advances in digital synthesis and processing, we regularly see musicians look backward to analog technologies and, on occasion, base their art on the limitations inherent in older systems. What are the most fruitful intersections of old and new in the music of today? How are living composers using – or avoiding – music of the past? What emerging technologies enable musicians to access or interact with the old as they create the new?
Musicological or theoretical papers on any topic relating to music since 1945 are welcome, as are papers relating to music technology and other disciplines in music. In keeping with our theme, we particularly invite scholars to consider issues relating to old and new in music, whatever their field of inquiry.
The submission deadline for proposals is November 29, 2010. All proposals must be submitted online in PDF, MS Word, or RTF form at the festival submission site.
Selected presenters will be notified by January 31, 2011.
Proposals should include an abstract (ca. 500 words) addressing the general subject, originality, methodology, and conclusions, and may also include supporting documentation as needed. Please specify any audio-visual equipment needed for the session. The maximum time limit for individual papers will be 20 minutes; paper presentations will be limited to 30 minutes total, including time for questions.
This year, we intend to publish selected papers in an online Proceedings of the UCM New Music Festival 2011. Authors will be responsible for obtaining all necessary permissions for their papers.
