Dr. Alan Wenger is Associate Professor of Music at the University of Central
Missouri, and joined the faculty in 2003 as the studio trumpet teacher. He held
prior positions at Amarillo College (Texas) and Midland Lutheran College
(Nebraska), and has served on the summer faculty of the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp
(Michigan).
A native of Omaha, Nebraska, Dr. Wenger's education includes a Bachelor of Music
Degree (1988) in Trumpet Performance from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln,
graduate studies at Boston University, and Master of Music (1995) and Doctor of
Musical Arts (2002) Degrees in Trumpet Performance from the University of North
Texas. His primary trumpet studies have been with Leonard Candelaria, Dennis
Schneider, Rolf Smedvig, and Roger Voisin. In June of 2009, he was selected as
one of only 35 participants from 10 countries for the Chosen Vale International
Trumpet Seminar in Enfield, NH where he studied and performed with some of the
finest trumpet soloists and teachers in the world.
For six years, he served as Principal Solo Cornet of the internationally
acclaimed and award winning Fountain City Brass Band in Kansas City, and
performed with them as both member and soloist in numerous concerts across the
United States and in the U.K. He is a former member of the Amarillo (Texas)
Symphony and Opera orchestras, the Lincoln (Nebraska) Symphony Orchestra and the
Nebraska Chamber Orchestra. His extensive chamber music experience includes
touring with the Empire Brass, Bluebonnet Brass, Nebraska Brass and Kansas Brass
Quintet. As a performer on natural trumpet, he has performed with the Texas
Baroque Ensemble, the Denton Bach Society, and as a member of the University of
North Texas baroque trumpet ensemble in performances in Germany, Sweden,
Switzerland, and the U.K. Other experiences include performances with the Four
Tops, Manheim Steamroller, Lou Rawls, the Temptations, Tommy Tune and the
Manhattan Rhythm Kings, contemporary Christian artists Michael W Smith and Ken
Medema, and playing in the solo cornet section of an International All-Star
Brass Band as part of the Brass Spectacular concerts sponsored by the Salvation
Army in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Presently, Dr. Wenger stays active as both a soloist and clinician and
frequently subs with the Kansas City Symphony and Kansas City Chamber Orchestra.
He has a keen interest in contemporary music, and has premiered solo works for
trumpet by composers Norman Goad, Eric Honour, Gene Murray, and Fisher Tull. His
arrangements for brass ensemble have been performed by the Amarillo Symphony,
the Arcadian Brass, and the Bluebonnet Brass. He is a member of the
International Trumpet Guild, and has performed at the 1995, 1997, 1999, and 2003
conferences as well as being a contributor to the Book Reviews and Recording
Reviews columns of the ITG Journal.
