UCM Scholars Symposium Planned for April 20

WARRENSBURG, MO (April 16, 2009) – The Honors College at the University of Central Missouri will host the 8th annual Central Scholars Symposium April 20 in the Elliott Union. The symposium provides an opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to showcase their research and creative projects. More than 50 students received faculty recommendations to present their research in the event this year.
Posters and art exhibits will be on display from 9 a.m. to noon. in Elliott Union 240. Students will be available to discuss their posters for portions of the display period. Students, faculty, staff, and members of the community are encouraged to view the wide variety of impressive projects on display.
Oral presentations will take place in Elliott Union 231-233 from 9 a.m. to noon. Presenters in this category are allotted 20 minutes for the presentation and questions.
Immediately prior to the keynote address, the UCM Student Wind Quintet will perform from noon to 12:30 p.m. during the Student Presenters Recognition Luncheon in Elliott Union 237B. The keynote speaker is Vicki Silvers Gier, assistant professor of psychology at Mississippi State University-Meridian Campus. Gier earned her Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from UCM in 1995, and her Master of Science degree in psychology in 1997. She is also the former academic advisor for the McNair Scholars Program at UCM.
"Shenanigans Improv,” the improvisation troupe from the UCM Department of Theatre, will perform in Elliott Union 231 from 2-3 p.m. In this unique format, student performers take suggestions from the audience and come up with a scene on the spot. With no scripts, the possibilities are endless..
