UCM Plans 9-11 Remembrance Ceremony

Contact: Jeff Murphy
WARRENSBURG, MO (Sept. 7, 2011) – The University of Central Missouri Office of Military and Veteran Services is working in cooperation with a faculty member from the safety sciences program to plan a special remembrance ceremony Friday, Sept. 9 in honor of approximately 3,000 individuals who lost their lives in the 9-11 tragedy. Everyone is invited to attend the ceremony at 12:05 p.m. at the university quadrangle flagpole, west of the Administration Building.

The ceremony includes a welcome by UCM President Charles Ambrose, moments of silence, flag lowering and bell ringing in memory of those who died. Participants include UCM military veteran students, Army ROTC cadets, and the Collegiate Firefighters Association. First responders including firefighting units, law enforcement and ambulance service personnel from Warrensburg, Johnson County, and Whiteman Air Force Base also plan to take part in the event.

Additional ceremonies are planned around the nation on the anniversary of the terrorist attacks, Sept. 11, 2001, which involved the loss of lives and collapse of the World Trade Center in New York City, and fatal airplane crashes that occurred at the U.S. Pentagon and in Pennsylvania. In addition to thousands of civilians who were killed, some 343 firefighters and paramedics, 23 police officers, and 37 Port Authority police officers died during these terrorist acts.

Individuals who want to know more about the 9-11 remembrance ceremony should contact Delilah Nichols, coordinator of Military and Veteran Services, at 660-543-8776 or Scott Ammon, assistant professor of safety science, at 660-543-4017.
