Oldest Alumna Celebrates 106 Years |

UCM's oldest known living alumna, Ann Schweer, Jefferson City, recently celebrated her 106th birthday with a special reception hosted by her alma mater.

Schweer's friends and UCM alumni attended the event Wednesday, May 10 in Jefferson City. Palmer R. Nichols II, a Jefferson City resident and president of UCM's Board of Governors, presented a resolution to Schweer in recognition of her membership in the university's Fifty-Year Society. Nichols' wife, Suzie, provided special music.
Career Educator in Jefferson City
Born in 1900 in Windsor, MO, Schweer actually turns 106 on Saturday, May 13. She graduated from UCM in 1929 and taught for 39 years as a middle school social studies teacher in Jefferson City.
Still Retains Her Passion for Education
Although she retired from teaching in 1965, the former Simonsen Junior High School educator still is passionate about the teaching profession and the need for students to earn their diplomas.
In a recent interview for the university's alumni publication, "Central Today," Schweer stressed the value of a college degree and reflected on the importance of having good teachers in the classroom.
"You make or break students. They have great enthusiasm and desire, but it must be channeled in the right direction," she noted.
Maintains Sense of Humor
Still maintaining a strong sense of humor, she jokes when asked what it's like to live beyond a century.
"Many people think I'm a miracle because of my age and that I am still getting around. I had to wait 100 years to get any attention."
