Aviation Team Headed for National Competition

WARRENSBURG, MO (Nov. 9, 2007) – The University of Central Missouri’s Flight Team captured first place in the overall school ranking at the 2007 Region VI SAFECON Competition Oct. 22-26 in St. Louis. The annual competition is sponsored by the National Intercollegiate Flying Association.
The first place ranking earned the UCM team an invitation to the NIFA National SAFECON competition at Middle Tennessee State University in May 2008.
The UCM team scored 279 overall points to earn the title, followed by Oklahoma State University and Parks College of St. Louis University. In team events, UCM also earned first place in ground events and fourth in flight events. Teams from eight schools participated in the event.
In individual competitions, Michael Collins was named the top scoring male contestant out of a field of 55 participants, and Ellie Engel earned second place in individual total scores among eight female participants. Justin Letempt placed third out of 40 participants in aircraft recognition, and Brett Largent placed third out of 22 in the ground trainer competition.
UCM team members also participated in navigation, short field approach and landing, computer accuracy, simulated comprehensive aircraft navigation and preflight inspection competitions.
