'Beyond Words' Examines Legacy of Immigration in U.S. Society

WARRENSBURG, Mo. (Feb. 10, 2009) – “Immigration/Migration: One World, Many Nations” is the theme for Beyond Words 2009, an interactive cultural and diversity awareness program presented Feb. 16-19 at UCM.
Awareness of the Challenges, Contributions of the Immigrant Population
The award-winning annual program consists of 50-minute tours conducted in the Elliott Union ballroom. During the tours, participants will experience a series of events that will allow them to understand firsthand the history of immigration in the United States, including highlights of the significant contributions made by immigrants.
By moving through interactive “experiences,” participants will gain an increased awareness of the issues facing those who immigrate to the U.S., both legally and illegally, and a better understanding of the sources of overt, covert or latent biases and prejudices facing immigrants.

The free tours for groups are conducted every half hour from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 16-19, and 5-7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 16, and Tuesday, Feb. 17. Groups and individuals should make reservations by contacting the Office of Community Engagement at 660-543-4156.
Beyond Words is coordinated through the efforts of student volunteers with UCM’s Office of Diversity and Office of Community Engagement.
