Boone, Freese Receive Charno Award

WARRENSBURG - 04/17/2007 - Anna Boone and James Freese are the recipients of UCM's prestigious Charno Award, presented annually to the top male and female members of the graduating class.

Honored at Spring Commencement

Boone and Freese were recognized during an April 16 reception honoring inductees into Who’s Who at the University of Central Missouri. They also will be recognized during spring commencement Saturday, May 5, in the university’s Multipurpose Building.

Anna Boone

Boone, the daughter of Randy and Janis Boone of Blue Springs, is a 2003 graduate of Blue Springs High School and a biology major at UCM.

She represented the university at the West Point Conference on Ethics in America in 2005 and was named UCM’s Homecoming Queen in 2006. Her leadership activities include president of the Panhellenic Executive Council, committee chair for Delta Zeta sorority, community service chair and national conference representative for Lambda Sigma Honor Society, and student admissions and alumni ambassador.

Boone was a supplemental instruction leader for Anatomy and Physiology I and II courses. She served on the Student Athletic Board and Student Finance Committee and was a member of Mortar Board and Order of Omega. She also has volunteered with Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Johnson County, Survival Adult Abuse Center and the Missouri Veterans Home.

James Freese

James Freese

Freese is the son of John and Terry Freese of Rocky Mount, MO. A 2003 graduate of McDonald County High School, Freese is a flight operations management major at UCM.

He is president of The Honors College Student Association and has been a student ambassador, alumni ambassador and a lead instructor for the AE 1400 course. He also serves as the student representative on the UCM Alumni Association Board of Directors. In 2005 he attended the National Collegiate Honors Council and was named the United Student Housing Association Member of the Year.

Freese also has volunteered with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Johnson County, the Warrensburg Lions Club Auction and local food pantry. Professionally, he has qualified as a commercial/instrumental pilot and is a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. He also served an internship for Southwest Airlines last summer.

Award a UCM Tradition

The award is named for George Charno, Sr., a Kansas City attorney who established the award in 1940 to recognize the outstanding male member of the graduating class. The companion award for the outstanding female class member was established in 1941.
