WARRENSBURG, MO (April 7, 2009) – Two Kansas City area high school students were named recipients of UCM's Cesar E. Chavez Scholarship during a ceremony Saturday at the Guadalupe Center in Kansas City.

Presentation Part of Cesar E. Chavez Day in Kansas City

Jesus “Sonny” Castro, UCM associate vice president and chief diversity officer, presented the scholarships to Genesis Pineda, daughter of Marcelino and Rosa Pineda, Shawnee, KS, and Aaron Farish, son of Tresa Burnett, Kansas City, KS.  The scholarships are for $2,500 and are renewable until graduation. The presentation was part of the Cesar E. Chavez Day celebration at the Guadalupe Center.

Genesis Pineda

A senior at Bishop Miege High School, Pineda will attend UCM in the fall to study Spanish, with plans to continue her studies in graduate school. Throughout high school, Pineda has been active in Spanish Club and Spirit Club and participated in soccer and tennis. She volunteered for Christmas in October, and was active in her church as an altar server, the campus ministry team and the Chicago Mission Trip in 2007, and served as a tutor for middle school students.

Aaron Farish

Farish will graduate from J.C. Harmon High School in May and plans to attend UCM to study political science. While in high school, he was active as a peer math tutor and with the Critical Friends group, the Superintendent’s Advisory Board, National Honor Society and the Student Council Executive Committee. He is student in the Gifted Education program and is co-chair of the Latinos of Tomorrow Scholarship Fest Committee.

In the community, Farish has been active in the Guadalupe Center’s Escalera Program and the 20/20 Leadership Program. He attended the National Council of LaRaza Lideres Conference, the Youth Leadership Institute and the United State Hispanic Leadership Conference. His accomplishments include receiving the Ambassador’s Award of Excellence, being chosen to represent his school in Leadership Kansas and being named a Kansas Honor Scholar.

Established in 2004

The Cesar Chavez Scholarship was established in 2004 to provide a scholarship for a graduate of a Kansas City area high school to plans to attend UCM. In 2008, the program was expanded to two scholarships. Recipients are graduates of Hispanic descent of high schools in a 16-county area surrounding Kansas City, MO., and Kansas City, KS, who have demonstrated financial need and have been accepted to attend UCM.

Applicants are interviewed and recipients selected by a selection committee made up of various Kansas City area community leaders and representatives of the UCM Office of Community Engagement.
