Display Features Work of Young Artists with Disabilities

WARRENSBURG - 06/21/2007-
Colorful, imaginative and thought-provoking, creative works by young artists with disabilities are showcased now through Aug. 17 at the University of Central Missouri Art Center Gallery. The national touring exhibition Shifting Gears is organized by VSA arts and sponsored by Volkswagon of America, Inc. The two organizations have partnered for the fourth time to make the show available at places such as UCM, where it can be viewed in the Art Center's Outer Gallery, 217 Clark St., Warrensburg.

Gallery Director Michael Crane said the exhibit features 15 works by artists ages 16-25. Each of them were asked to reflect on a pivotal moment in their lives when things changed dramatically. The theme challenges each artist to contemplate their life and its relationship to art and disability.
"Growthplate" Earns Grand Prize
One such work, "Growthplate," is a large acrylic, graphite, and ink panel created by Isaac Powell, a 25-year-old resident of Pullman, WA. As the grand prize winner in this juried show, he received $20,000 to pursue a Master of Fine Arts degree at Washington State University.
Powell notes about his work, "The title is personal to me because my right arm was damaged in the womb. One flower grows tall, but the others are just as beautiful, regardless of their height. No matter what the circumstance the flower still survives and blooms."
Art Presented in a Variety of Media
Paintings, pen and ink, photographs, and more provide an artistic feast for the eyes in this exhibit, while also providing those in attendance an opportunity to learn more about the works' creators and their inspiring stories. The display can be viewed 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays, or by appointment. Those who would like more information are asked to call Michael Crane at 660-543-4498.
