UCM's Earth Week 2011 Includes Campus and Community Partnerships

WARRENSBURG, MO (Nov. 18, 2010) – The University of Central Missouri’s Earth Week Committee, in partnership with the UCM President’s Commission on Sustainability and representatives from Warrensburg’s Citizens for Environmental Action, is sponsoring the Earth Week 2011 Campus and Community Partnerships for Sustainability.
The partnerships are intended to bring campus and community groups together to produce projects that positively impact social, economic and environmental sustainability. Each team must consist of an approved UCM campus organization and a Warrensburg community group. Together, these groups will form a project to promote sustainability in one of six categories: health, arts and culture, food and shelter, the planet, neighborhoods, and education.
All entrants must be willing to participate in publicity activities and may be required to provide photographs or other materials for promotional purposes. Judging will be conducted by sponsoring officials, who will consider criteria such as idea concept, innovation, benefit to others, collaboration, positive impact of social, economic and/or environmental sustainability, and ability to affect behavior. The judging panel may require additional information from entrants. All groups may choose to work on multiple teams, however, separate entry forms are requested for each submission.
Projects must be submitted to the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences by 5 p.m. April 5, 2011. Entries can be submitted online at sboone@ucmo.edu or mailed to University of Central Missouri, College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, Martin 126, Warrensburg, MO 64093-5015. Entries by mail should be as hard copies or on CD/DVD.
Two winners will be chosen for each of the six categories. One winner will receive $100 for a project that has not been implemented and another winner will receive $100 for a project that is already in progress. The finalist winners will be announced at the 2011 Earth Week keynote address.

April 22, 2011 will mark the 41st anniversary of Earth Day. Earth Day initiatives attempt to change the importance that people place on the environment. UCM’s 2011 Earth Week Celebration will host events celebrating sustainability and recycling efforts on campus and informing participants of the importance of going “green.” Through the Earth Week activities, UCM hopes students, faculty, staff, and community members will adopt a more sustainable lifestyle.
