Ellis Map and Globe Collection Dedicated

UCM recently recognized the contributions of James and Marguerite Ellis to the university's geography program with the dedication of the James and Marguerite Ellis Wall Map and Globe Collection.
Generosity Benefits Students in Many Areas
The generosity of the Ellises has made possible lectures, scholarships for student participation in professional conferences, and the acquisition of new wall maps and globes for the hallway and classrooms. UCM’s Department of Geography and Political Science and the College of Arts and Sciences officially named the university’s map and globe collection during a dedication ceremony April 19 in the university’s Wood Building, where the collection is located.

Distinguished Careers in Public Service and Nursing
A native of Pettis County, James Ellis graduated from Central Missouri in 1961 with majors in geography and history. He has had a long and distinguished career with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, working on the Minuteman Missile Complex at Whiteman Air Force Base, Truman Lake and Dam, the Inter-Oceanic Canal Study in Panama, and in real estate leasing and mapping for the government in several American states.
His skills in aerial photography and topographical mapping re-routed a railroad across Richard B. Russell Lake and saved the U.S. government $4.75 million. He was responsible for real estate leasing in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait in connection with Desert Shield-Desert Storm, for which he received the J.W. Morris Medallion as Employee of the Year (1992).
Marguerite Ellis, a native of West Plains, received her nursing degree in 1961 from Burge Hospital School of Nursing in Springfield. In addition to nursing positions at Bothwell Medical Center and other medical facilities in Sedalia, she has worked at hospitals around the country and at the Canal Zone Mental Health Center in the Panama Canal Zone.
The Ellises are the parents of two daughters, Robin Sneed of Gardner, Kan., and Regina Ellis of Kansas City, Mo, and two granddaughters, Amanda and Megan Sneed.
