WARRENSBURG, MO (Sept. 29, 2010) – The Nabzdyk family of St. Peters, Mo., was honored as the 2010 Family of the Year during the University of Central Missouri’s Family Weekend celebration Sept. 24-26.
Sophomore Anna Nabzdyk, a graphic design major, nominated her family for the honor. The Nabzdyks were recognized during halftime ceremonies of the UCM Mules-Washburn Ichabods football game Saturday, Sept. 25, at UCM’s Audrey J. Walton Stadium. The family also was honored during the annual Family Weekend Talent Show Saturday evening.
In her nomination essay, Nabzdyk acknowledged the challenges her family faced while coping with her younger brother’s serious illness during her freshman year at UCM. With her brother’s recovery, she has realized the valuable lessons learned from her family.
“My family has not just strengthened me as a person; they form me as a person,” she wrote. “Through my family’s guidance, I have found who I am and where I am going. The values they instilled in me have shaped my life goals, including a college degree so I can better serve the world. They continually challenge and inspire me to realize and fulfill my potential while giving me the support I don’t always deserve. Most importantly, my family has taught me how to love, which is the greatest gift they could ever give me.”
Family weekend is an annual event at UCM, providing an opportunity early in the fall semester for students to invite their families to campus to share the UCM experience and participate in a variety of events designed to highlight campus life and opportunities.
