As part of the campus observance of Veterans Day, the University of Central Missouri dedicated a new flagpole at the Audrey J. Walton Clubhouse at Pertle Springs Monday, Nov. 12, to commemorate the service of the many military veterans and active duty service men and women who make up the UCM community.
Located at the entrance to driveway to the clubhouse, the flagpole was purchased and erected through the efforts a group of approximately 20 emeriti UCM faculty and community members who raised the funds for the purchase and installation.
Jenne Vanderbout, assistant vice president for alumni and development, acknowledged their generosity and patriotic spirit.
Lynn Lowder, UCM director of veteran and military services, addressed those gathered, noted the significance of the display of the American flag.
“I remember, when I see the flag, the literally thousands of young men and women who died for the principle that all men, women and children should live free,” he said. “Members of every generation are called to duty, and no one wants peace more than the combat veteran. Since 1775, no other country like ours has stood up for freedom around the world. As long as the red, white and blue flies, we will have that freedom, and we will remember the men and women who have made the sacrifice on our behalf.”
