Gala Scholarship Concert Planned for March 30
WARRENSBURG -03/21//2007 - UCM's Friends of Music Society will conclude a successful 2006-2007 concert season with the annual Gala Scholarship Concert Friday, March 30.
Annual Event Benefits Music Scholarship Fund
The season finale is planned for 7:30 p.m. in Hendricks Hall, continuing the longstanding tradition of the annual gala performances by UCM faculty and students that have benefited the department's scholarship fund.
Students Present Varied Program
More than 160 students performing in the department's top music ensembles will showcase their performing skills with selections ranging from jazz to classical selections by Felix Mendelssohn and Aaron Copland, along with original selections.
Gourmet hors d'oeuvres will be served during intermission, accompanied by barbershop quartets.
Distinguished Music Alumni Award
A highlight of the evening will be the presentation of the Department of Music's Distinguished Music Alumni Award to Betty Meyer of Blue Springs. Meyer, who with her husband, Ted, owns Meyer Music Co. in locations in the metropolitan Kansas City area, also is a music educator. The Meyers have been major benefactors of the UCM music programs throughout the years.
Inaugural Season a Success
The Gala Scholarship Concert wraps up the inaugural season of the Friends of Music Society Concert Series. The first season of performances included "The Voice of Mozart: A Jubilee Concert," a celebration of the 25th anniversary of the composer's birth, followed by a concert presented by UCM music alumnus and former Warrensburg resident David Halen, the concertmaster of the Saint Louis Symphony, and Daniel Lee, principal cellist with the Saint Louis Symphony. Classic guitar virtuoso Petar Jankovic and concert pianist Ralph Votapek also brought their world-renowned talents to UCM with solo performances.
New Season to be Announced Soon
The 2007-2008 concert series will be announced later in the spring. The season-opening Faculty Showcase, which features the many talented members of the UCM music faculty, will become an annual event.
