Gallery Hosts Exhibitions by Faculty, Jaimie Warren

Contact: Mike Greife
WARRENSBURG, MO (Sept. 22, 2011) – The University of Central Missouri Gallery of Art and Design will host two new exhibits, both opening in conjunction with UCM’s 2011 Homecoming festivities.

The annual Faculty Exhibition opens Thursday, Oct. 6, in the main gallery. The exhibition will feature work by the current and emeriti faculty of the Department of Art and Design. A platform to showcase their professional practices outside their university duties, the exhibition features a diverse array of artistic media including painting, sculpture, textiles, and ceramics.

Opening the same day in Gallery 115 is the second exhibition of “Successu,” a series of three solo exhibitions. Produced by artist Kansas City-based artist Jaimie Warren, the exhibition focuses on the artist’s collection of inspirational material for making work, and exemplifies the influence of popular culture on contemporary artists.

A native of Waukesha, Wis., Warren is a curator, performance artist, and photographer who makes theatrical, humorous, self-portraits in different scenarios and locations, including at parties, in her kitchen, in her car, and at the zoo. She has exhibited at White Flag Projects, St. Louis; Smith-Stewart, New York; Getsumin, Osaka; Beida University, Beijing, and Rocket Projects, Miami, among other venues. Her photography has been published in dozens of national and international publications

The series “Successu,” which is Latin for “in process,” examines the artists’ process from ideas to production, to installation and finished work. Utilizing media, each exhibition is a presentation of video composed by or featuring the exhibiting artist at various points in the creative process.

An opening reception is planned for 4-6 p.m. Oct. 6. The public is invited to attend, meet the artists and discuss their work.

The Gallery of Art and Design also will host “In Conversation,” an informal talk with gallery director Jeremy Mikolajczak and Kansas City artist Rita Blitt at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23. The presentation follows the 11 a.m. dedication of Blitt’s sculpture “Fantasy,” which she recently donated to UCM for installation on the lawn of the university’s James C. Kirkpatrick Library.

Anne Lindberg, the Kansas City artist whose work comprised the first exhibition in the “Successu” series, will presented a lecture at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28, in Twomey Auditorium. She will discuss her recent exhibitions in Brazil and Norway and her recent artist residency in Norway.

The UCM Gallery of Art and Design is open to the public, free of charge, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursdays, and noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays. Groups are welcome.
