WARRENSBURG, MO (Jan. 5, 2012) – The University of Central Missouri’s Gallery of Art and Design opens the spring semester exhibit season with two exciting exhibits. “Returning West” and “Earth as Art” will open Jan. 12 and run through Feb. 10.

In the Main Gallery, “Returning West,” a sabbatical faculty exhibit by John Louder, professor of art and design, and his wife, Annie Helmericks-Louder, is an exhibition of journals, photographs, sketches and finished studio work recorded during a five-month trip throughout the western United States. Louder and Helmericks-Louder exhibit a visual diary of works on location and post-journey production. Going back to the landscapes and origins of birth and adolescence, “Returning West” reveals the deep love for the terrain and its life-long influences on the artists.

A native of Twin Falls, Idaho, Louder received a Bachelor of Arts degree in art from Whitman College, Walla Walla, Wash.; a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Oregon; and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Arizona. He and his wife have exhibited throughout the Midwest and in Florida.

In the Outer Gallery, “Earth as Art” showcases the Landsat satellite images of Earth captured over the years and received by the U.S. Geological Survey’s Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center in South Dakota. Landsat imagery offers a surprising depiction of the intricate beauty of Earth’s natural patterns. Instead of paint or watercolor, the medium for the “Earth as Art” collection is light.

An opening reception is planned for 4-6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 12, in the Main Gallery. The artist will present a gallery talk at 3 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, in the gallery. The public is invited to attend and meet the artists.

The UCM Gallery of Art and Design at 217 E. Clark St. is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursdays, and Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. The gallery also is open by appointment, and groups are welcome. For more information, contact the gallery staff at 660-543-4498.
