Gallery of Art and Design Hosts Exhibit Featuring Chicago Artists

Contact: Mike Greife
WARRENSBURG, MO (Sept. 29, 2009) - UCM’s Gallery of Art and Design will host two exhibitions through Nov. 6, with the public invited to an opening reception Oct. 1.

Design Chicago 2010 Features Works by Chicago Artists

In the Main Gallery, Design Chicago 2010 will feature new work by Chicago-based or originated, graphic, industrial, and interior designers. An exhibition of all things design, Design Chicago 2010 will blur the lines between art and design, design as model for the betterment of humanity, and the multi-faceted nature to the practice and professional responsibility of a working “designer.”

Participating in the exhibition are Studio 1 a.m., Project H Design, Craighton Berman, Perkins+Will, and Rotofugi, each bringing a unique perspective to what design is today and how it affects our daily lives.

Design-Based Lectures Planned

In conjunction with the exhibition, the Gallery of Art and Design will present three design-based lectures scheduled throughout the exhibition and will feature a mini-book launch in honor of Emily Pilloton of Project H Design’s new book, Design Revolution. 100 Products that Empower People.

The first lecture is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 1 by Kirby Kerr of Rotofugi. Bryan Schabel of Perkins+Will will lecture on new architectural initiatives on Thursday, Oct. 8, and completing the fall lecture series is a lecture by Missouri-based fabric designer and illustrator Tula Pink on Thursday, Oct. 22. All lectures begin at 3 p.m. in the Gallery of Art and Design.

Opening Reception Planned for Oct. 1

A public opening reception is scheduled for 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1. In conjunction with the opening reception of Design Chicago 2010, Gallery 115 will feature an exhibition of new work titled Being and Becoming by UCM alum Dennis Helsel. Helsel, a graduate student at UMKC, presents an installation of paintings, drawings, scribbles, notes, and quotes. While searching to find a style and identity as an artist, the installation provides insight in Helsels process in which he struggles with finding meaning through it all. Being and Becoming will be on exhibit through Oct. 9.
