Hibdon Receives J.P. Mees Outstanding Professional Staff Award

WARRENSBURG, MO (April 21, 2011) – Karen Hibdon, Warrensburg, manager of the University of Central Missouri’s Multipurpose Building, received the highest honor conferred upon the university’s professional staff when she received the John Paul Mees Award for Outstanding Professional Staff during the annual Professional Staff Breakfast April 14.
Brenda Moeder, associate director of university housing at the University of Central Missouri and 2010 recipient, presented the award to Hibdon, who was nominated by her peers at UCM. The award is named for the late John Paul Mees, who died in 2000 while serving as vice president of planning and policy/executive assistant to the president. Mees, who was known as a dedicated and motivated employee, joined the university in 1988 as executive assistant to the president and professor of education. He also served as provost and vice president of academic affairs.
A native of Great Britain, Hibdon received a bachelor’s degree from the University of London before traveling to the United States to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Recreation in 1981 and a Master of Science degree in Leisure and Recreation Services in 1983, both from UCM. She also received Missouri teaching certification in physical education and social studies.
She became manager of the UCM Multipurpose Building in 1990, where she has volunteered for many years as instructor of a water aerobics class. She also has volunteered as assistant soccer coach for the UCM women’s soccer program. As manager of the facility, Hibdon is recognized for her service to faculty, staff, students and the community through her long hours and willingness to accommodate the many groups that use the facility throughout the year
At UCM Hibdon has served as president and vice president of the Professional Staff Council. She also has served on the President’s Commission on the Status of Women, the Policy Review Council, the Joint Committee on Strategic Planning, and a variety of Professional Staff Council committees. In the Warrensburg community, she has served on the board of directors of the Johnson County United Way, coordinating the campus-wide UCM United Way campaign, and the Warrensburg Community Center Facilities Advisement Committee.
Hibdon is a member of the International Association of Fitness Professionals and the Aquatic Exercise Association.
