Homecoming 2009 Pays Homage to 'Mules Around the World'

WARRENSBURG, MO (Oct. 2, 2009) – UCM celebrates “Mules Around the World” during the 2009 Homecoming celebration Oct. 9-10 as friends and alumni join UCM students and staff in a variety of activities.

Special Events Planned

In addition to the traditional Homecoming events and the many campus reunions, UCM will celebrate the 50th anniversary of UCM’s nursing program. The university also will host an International Student Reunion, with students planning to attend from around the globe.

Homecoming 2009Royalty Finalists Announced

The Homecoming Pep Rally is planned 4:30 p.m. Friday in the UCM Multipurpose Building. The Homecoming royalty finalists will be announced, and student organizations will have an opportunity to show their UCM pride during a variety of competitions. The UCM Jennies volleyball team takes on the Northwest Missouri State University Lady Bearcats at 7 p.m. in Multipurpose Building.

Parade Has Something for Everyone

Saturday’s festivities kick off with the annual Homecoming parade at 9 a.m. The Homecoming parade is one of the most popular traditions on campus and ranks among the top annual community events. It’s always a colorful feast for the eyes, bringing the campus and local communities together to enjoy the Marching Mules, floats, equestrian units, dignitaries, area organizations, businesses and many regional high school bands.

The parade route, unchanged from previous years, will start at the intersection of Holden and Clark streets. The route runs north on Holden Street through campus through downtown Warrensburg. The parade route turns east onto Gay Street to College Street. Once on College Street, the route heads south until it reaches South Street. The band and parade judges will be positioned on the west side of Holden Street on the lawn of the Johnson County Courthouse.

Luncheons Planned

The Mule Train will host its pre-game tailgate from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the parking lot at the corner of Washington and South streets. The Alumni and Friends pregame lunch is planned for 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Elliott Union ballroom. The cost is for the alumni luncheon $8 for adults and $5 for children ages 5–12.

KMOS-TV Hosts Clifford the Big Red Dog

Clifford the Big Red Dog, popular PBS children’s program characters, will participate in the Homecoming parade, courtesy of KMOS-TV, UCM’s public broadcasting station. He will available to meet with children following the parade from 10:30 a.m.to noon in Smiser Alumni Center.

King and Queen Announced, Distinguished Alumni Honored

The annual Homecoming football game starts at 1:30 p.m. on the Vernon Kennedy Field in Audrey J. Walton Stadium as the Mules take on the Fort Hays State University Tigers. Halftime activities include the introduction of the 2009 Distinguished Alumni, the crowning of the 2009 Homecoming royalty and performances by the Marching Mules and alumni band.
