UCM Celebrates 2011 Homecoming with Variety of Events

WARRENSBURG, MO (Sept. 27, 2011) – The University of Central Missouri invites the community to join in the celebration of “Traditions” during the 2011 Homecoming celebration Oct. 5-8 as friends and alumni join UCM students and staff in a variety of activities.
The Homecoming Pep Rally is planned for 4-5:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7, in the Multipurpose Building. Student organizations will have an opportunity to show their UCM pride during a variety of competitions. Later that evening the UCM Alumni Association will recognize the recipients of the Distinguished Alumni Award at the annual Distinguished Alumni Reception and Dinner at 5:30 p.m. Friday in the Elliott Union ballroom. UCM alumni Mark Schupp and Mike Webb will receive the Distinguished Alumni Award.
Saturday’s festivities kick off with Alumni and Friends Continental Breakfast in the Smiser Alumni Center at 8 a.m. prior to the annual Homecoming parade at 9 a.m. A pancake breakfast also is planned for 8:30 a.m. in the Warrensburg depot parking lot, and the Elliott Union breakfast is planned for the same time in the tent at the corner of Holden and Clark streets.
The parade route, unchanged from previous years, will start at the intersection of Holden and Clark streets. The route runs north on Holden Street through campus and downtown Warrensburg. The parade route turns east onto Gay Street to College Avenue. At College Avenue, the route heads south until it reaches South Street. Band and parade judges will be positioned on the west side of Holden Street on the lawn of the Johnson County Courthouse.
The Man in the Yellow Hat, the popular PBS Kids children’s program character, will participate in the Homecoming parade, courtesy of KMOS-TV, UCM’s public broadcasting station. In addition, Curious George will be available to meet with children following the parade from 10:30 a.m.to noon in the Smiser Alumni Center, located in the southwest corner of the Elliott Union.
Following the parade, UCM alumni and friends are invited to gather at the West Side Market dining area in Todd Hall for the Alumni Lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cost for lunch is $7, which may be paid at the door.
The annual Homecoming football game starts at 1:30 p.m. in the Audrey J. Walton Stadium as the UCM Mules take on the Northwest Missouri State University Bearcats. Halftime activities include the introduction of the 2011 Distinguished Alumni, the crowning of the 2011 Homecoming royalty and performances by the Marching Mules and Alumni Band.
In addition to the traditional activities, a variety of alumni reunions are planned for Homecoming weekend. Groups scheduled to gather include the 25-year reunion of the Mules football team, Alpha Phi, the UCM Alumni Band, the Baptist Student Union, Delta Chi, Elliott Union employees, UCM football lettermen, Sigma Tau Gamma, Theta Chi, Tau Kappa Epsilon, the Wrestling Hall of Legends and Zeta Tau Alpha.
