The University of Central Missouri's chief licensing administrator, Dale Carder, recently accepted the International Collegiate Licensing Association's prestigious Synergy Award: Program of the Year honors. It recognizes Carder's leadership in making the UCM licensing and trademark program the best in the nation for 2007.

Honored in Orlando

Carder, associate vice president for university advancement, was recognized June 9 during ICLA's fifth annual convention in Orlando, Fla., an event attended by about 2,000 people. He is the first representative of an NCAA Division II institution to earn this recognition. The licensing and trademark program oversees the use of Central Missouri's name, logos and insignia.

John Mybeck, vice president of university services for Strategic Marketing Affiliates, Indianapolis, Ind., nominated Carder for the award. SMA is an affiliate member of ICLA, and has served as the university's licensing agency since July 2005. The company handles contractual relationships with licensed vendors who produce and sell merchandise with university marks, in addition to overseeing the artwork approval process and collecting royalties.

Progressive Direction in Licensing

"The award is presented to one individual, but as I see it, it is really a snapshot of what that program has accomplished, not only for the university, but for the industry as a whole," Mybeck said. "We nominated Carder and UCM because of the progressive direction that the university has taken with its licensing program."

Mybeck pointed to efforts such as the day-long Branding UCM Seminar, initiated under Carder's leadership. It brings together school personnel, vendors, and individuals associated with the licensing program to find out how university marks are being used, learn about licensing guidelines, the Retailers' Program, graphic identity standards, and editorial style guidelines.

Award Qualifications

To be considered for the award, the recipient must:

  • Have demonstrated extraordinary commitment to collegiate licensing over the past year that has directly contributed to the betterment of the industry and his/her place of employment;
  • Have made significant contributions to the collegiate licensing industry through innovative or new ideas during the current academic year;
  • Have played a vital role on campus/in the industry through his/her leadership;
  • Have demonstrated teamwork/involvement from multiple components in the licensing process;
  • Be a current ICLA member from an institution, conference or bowl.

Carder's Licensing Achievements

An ICLA member, Carder became associate vice president in 2002. As chair of the university's Integrated Marketing Team, he has overseen an institutional name change, program growth in licensed retailers of 120 percent during the past year and new record highs in royalties each of the past three years. During his tenure, he has also established innovative licensing and branding programs such as "Get the Red Out," a back-to-school festival that brings community residents and local retailers to campus to show their support for UCM athletics through the sales and promotion of UCM licensed products. He initiated the Branding UCM Seminar and the UCM Retailer Program. He also engaged in a number of "outside-the-box" marketing efforts, in conjunction with the UCM licensing program, to establish a strong university brand.

Carder commended the team effort that led to the award, noting, "It is exciting to work with outstanding professionals at this university, and see their work rewarded as the best of all universities."

Sharing the Recognition

Carder commended the cooperative efforts of many university constituents who helped make the award possible, including strong support from the university administration and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, as well as University Relations which handled design work and created the graphic standards manual. Additional support came from Russ Bloom, director of promotions and special events, who organized the local retailer program and the Branding UCM Seminar.

"Most importantly, I would like to thank our students, alumni and fans who purchase our trademarks," Carder said.
