WARRENSBURG, MO (May 15, 2008) - Services offered by The Lighthouse Violence Prevention and Intervention Center at UCM have moved to a new home beginning May 15.
Lighthouse services now are housed in the Office of Counseling and Psychological Services in Humphreys Building 131. Services have been offered in Richards Hall since the fall of 2005.
New Model for Services Being Developed
The move is consistent with the university’s commitment to develop a new institutional model to address issues such as partner violence and sexual assault. The model is being developed by the Division of Student Affairs utilizing existing personnel and resources in manner that can be sustained over time. Services previously offered at The Lighthouse were funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice Violence Against Women, but those federal funds concluded in 2008.
“We’re proud of the service that has been provided,” said Amy Kiger, assistant director of university health services for violence and substance abuse prevention. “Moving Lighthouse services to Counseling and Psychological Services enables us to maintain momentum in this crucial area, while also providing an opportunity to strive for a more comprehensive approach to prevention.”
Variety of Services Offered
Lighthouse services include:
- Listening, support and referrals for survivors of sexual assault, partner violence and stalking
- Consultation for family and friends on how to respond
- Information on options for reporting crimes, seeking campus disciplinary action and obtaining protection
As Lighthouse services move to CPS, Paul Polychronis, assistant director of university health services for counseling and psychological services, will help facilitate a smooth transition process.
“We think that the Lighthouse services are a great fit with the skills and training of our staff. We embrace this expanded mission and look forward to serving students in this way,” he said.
