College High Memorial Preserves Traditions

WARRENSBURG - 11/20/2006 - Groundbreaking ceremonies Saturday morning, Nov. 18, on the UCM campus marked the first step in the construction of the College High Memorial in commemoration of the university's former laboratory school.

Training Facility for Generations of Educators
The school was operated by the university as a teacher education laboratory school from 1913 until it closed in 1976. First known as Training High School, it later became College High School in 1938. It was renamed University High School in 1972 when Central Missouri State College became University of Central Missouri. The school was closed with the completion of the 1975-76 school year.
Alumna, University Personnel Participate
Becky Sadler Klein, an alumna of College High School and UCM and a member of the UCM Alumni Association board of directors, served as mistress of ceremonies. Also participating were Sharon Lamson, chair of the UCM Department of Curriculum and Instruction, and John Culp, also a College High and UCM alumnus and member of the UCM Alumni Association board of directors.
Alumni and Friends Provide Funding
Funds for the construction of the memorial were raised by the College High Memorial Committee. More than $47,000 in contributions were received from College High School alumni and friends for the project with the assistance of the UCM Office of Alumni Relations and Development.
Committee Oversees Project
Members of the College High Memorial Committee are alumni Jeanne Jackson, Kay Dolan, Shirley Jones, Betty Bird, Melissa Gower, Joyce Jones, John Culp, Frances Ellis, Randy Ellis, Bill Brenner, Ron Fitterling, Verlyn Hursh and Marie Haag, and former school librarian Ophelia Gilbert, all of Warrensburg; and Cleta Walters, Odessa; Ray Young, Overland Park, Kan.; Linda Siegfried and Jerry Ellis, Centerview; Judy Yancey, Holden; and Wilella Baldwin, Concordia.
