MLK Gospel Concert Planned for Jan. 17

WARRENSBURG, MO (Jan. 7, 2011) – The University of Central Missouri will celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with the 12th annual MLK Gospel Concert, planned for 7:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 17, in Hendricks Hall.
The gospel concert is one of a variety of events that make up UCM’s annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration. The concert will include inspirational performances by the Praise Teams from Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church and First Baptist Church of Warrensburg, Jesus Saves Pentecostal Church Sanctuary Choir and the UCM ABC Gospel Choir, as well as soloist Shirley Briscoe.
In addition to the music performances, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech will be re-enacted by special guest Mark Carter, director of admissions from State Fair Community College.
The 2011 MLK Gospel Concert is jointly sponsored by UCM’s Office of Community Engagement and the Performing Arts Series. The public is invited to attend, free of charge.
The highlight of the 2011 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration will be the Freedom Scholarship Dinner on Tuesday, Jan. 18, in the Elliott Union ballroom. Arun Gandhi, grandson of Mohandas Gandhi, will be the featured speaker for the event. Tickets for the dinner are still available by calling the UCM Office of Community Engagement at 660-543-4156.
