MLK Issues Forum Poses Key Question

WARRENSBURG - 1/08/2007- "Are We Valuing the Dream?" will be asked as the topic of an Issues Forum planned for Wednesday, Jan. 10, as part of UCM's annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration.

Public Invited to Attend and Participate

The Rev. Alex Wales, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Warrensburg, will moderate the panel discussion from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Elliott Union atrium. Members of the panel are Niko Aguirre, a graduate assistant in the UCM Office of Meeting and Conference Services; the Rev. Gill Ford, Region IV director of the NAACP; the Rev. Joe Alexander, pastor emeritus of the First United Methodist Church of Warrensburg; and Betty Roberts, UCM vice president for administration and finance. The panel discussion is open to the public, with those attending encouraged to participate.

Scholarship Dinner Planned for Jan. 16

In addition to the Issues Forum, the annual celebration includes the Freedom Scholarship Dinner at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, in the UCM Multipurpose Building. Missouri State Representative Leonard "Jonas" Hughes, D-Kansas City, will be the keynote speaker, and the Freedom Scholarships will be presented to Johnson County, Missouri and Kansas City area high school students and UCM students. A reception for Hughes is planned for 5 to 5:45 p.m. in the Alumni Room of the Multipurpose Building.

Tickets Remain Available

Tickets for the dinner are $25 per person or $200 per table of eight. Proceeds from ticket sales are used to fund scholarships presented to area high school students. Tickets may be purchased from the UCM Office of Community Engagement, Elliott Union 224, 660-543-4156.

Additional Events Planned

An ecumenical worship service is set for Jan. 14 at the First Church of the Nazarene, Warrensburg, and a community service blood drive is planned for Jan. 23-24. The seventh annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Gospel Concert takes place Jan. 22 at the Elliot Union.
