WARRENSBURG, MO (March 18, 2010) – UCM's Talking Mules Debate Team has captured the prestigious Montgomery Cup, defeating Imperial University of the United Kingdom in the final debate of the 2010 Montgomery Cup Tour of the United Kingdom.
The Talking Mules earned the cup in the annual debate competition by competing against university debate societies of Edinburgh, St. Andrews, Durham, York and Imperial before completing the tour March 15 with a stop at Oxford University.
Making up the U.S. team were UCM graduate students Mark Wonnacott and Janis McCambridge and students Zack Dodson and Adam Blood. Michael Tweedy and Jory Baker from Northwest Missouri State and Valerie Melton from Missouri Southern rounded out the team.
The tour dates back to 1995 when organizers formed the competition to provide an opportunity for debate exchanges between U.S. and Britain. The U.S. team travels through Scotland, England. Wales and Ireland, competing against the best debate societies.
The U.S. team captured the title for an unprecedented seven years before losses in 2008 and 2009. Winning the 2010 competition returns the cup to the U.S.
