Flight Team Captures Regional Title |

UCM's Flight Team has earned a trip to national competition after winning top honors at the 2006 Region VI Safety and Flight Evaluation Conference (SAFECON) at Kansas State University-Salina Oct. 16-20.

The regional and national competitions are sponsored by the National Intercollegiate Flying Association. UCM Flight Team members earned 157 points for the overall ranking to win the regional event, finishing 27 points higher than second-place Parks College of St. Louis University.
Also Earned Judges' Trophy
Central Missouri's performance also helped it to earn the Judges' Trophy in the competition. Other teams included Southeastern Oklahoma State University, Spartan College of Aeronautics, Oklahoma State University, Kansas State University – Salina, and the University of Nebraska-Omaha.
Top Three Teams Compete Nationally
Teams finishing in the top three spots, UCM, Parks College, and Southeastern Oklahoma, now go on to compete in the national SAFECON in May 2007 at Ohio State University, Columbus. UCM made the national trip in 2006 after taking third in the 2005 Region VI SAFECON.
Individual Awards Also Earned
On its way to victory, UCM captured the highest ranking in flight events and ground events. Team member Allie M. Engel, Overland Park, KS, was the Top Scoring Female Contestant, and Michael Collins, New Boston, MI, earned the third highest ranking for Top Pilot and Top Scoring Male Contestant.
Variety of Skills Tested
The competition included categories such as aircraft preflight inspection, aircraft recognition, computer accuracy, ground trainer, message drop, navigation, power off landing, simulated comprehensive aircraft navigation, and safety.
UCM's team is coached by Toru Suda, and advised by Mark Sherman, assistant professor of aviation and assistant chair of the Department of Aviation, and Bart Brown, assistant professor of aviation and chief flight instructor.
