Panel Will Discuss Religion and American Politics

WARRENSBURG, MO (March 30, 2012) – The Center for Religious Studies at the University of Central Missouri will host “Religion and Politics in American Culture,” a panel discussion of religion and the current political arena at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, in Elliott Union 238.

The Rev. Renee Curtiss Meyer, adjunct faculty member at the Center for Religious Studies, organized and will host the panel. Participants include Don Compier, dean of St. Paul School of Theology; Darlene Budd, associate professor of political science; Kamel Ghozzi, associate professor of sociology, and Gregory Streich, professor of political science.
Discussion will include the religious overtones of the current race for president and how the religious beliefs of presidential candidates could influence American government. While the United States claims the ideal of separation of church and state, issues of religion dominate political discussions on sex, prayer, health care, and clothing, such as the Hijab.
Panelists also will examine how beliefs about contraception, abortion, and same-sex marriage become so central to our politics affect how people vote? Discussion and questions from the audience will be appreciated and welcomed!
