UCM Hosts Annual Teach-In on Sustainability on Feb. 13

WARRENSBURG, MO (Feb. 3, 2014) – The University of Central Missouri Office of Sustainability will host the annual Teach-In on Sustainability from 9:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, in the Elliott Student Union.

Focusing on the theme “Small Changes: Big Impact,” the Teach-in on Sustainability is a  a one day conference educating participants about the importance of sustainability and how each person can be involved and make a difference. Among the featured speakers at this year’s event will be Leroy Shatto, owner of Shatto Milk Company, Osborn, Mo. Shatto will speak at 11 a.m. on “Milk: from Cow to Bottle,” emphasizing the company’s focus on sustainability in the production and marketing of its products.

Faced with the changes in agriculture and dairy farming, Leroy and Barbara Shatto in 2001 began investigating alternative methods of marketing their milk products produced on their family farm in north Missouri. In 2003 Shatto Milk Company started delivery of farm fresh milk in glass bottles to a handful of retail stores in the Kansas City area. Shatto Milk products are now available at more than 70 retail outlets in northwest Missouri and the metropolitan Kansas City area.

Academic disciplines campus wide will come together for the event, along with experts in the field and industry leaders, to offer variety of 35-minute presentations on a wide array of subjects related to environmental sustainability, the effect of communities on the environment, and what individuals and companies are doing to mitigate their impact on the environment. More than 20 speakers will be present to discuss a variety of topics.

The event is free and open to the public. Door prizes will be awarded throughout the day.
