Building A Winning Community Program Values Input

Contact: Jeff Murphy
WARRENSBURG, MO (March 16, 2011) – Members of the University of Central Missouri community and the Warrensburg area are invited to participate in a community-sponsored opportunity designed to develop the city into a vital entity with an improved the quality of life for local citizens. All individuals who are interested in taking part in the Building a Winning Community program are invited to attend a series of public meetings in March and April.

The program will involve input from all citizens with a goal to create a shared community vision and action plan based on the values and ideas of local citizens. Public meetings are set for 7 p.m. March 17 and 31 and April 14 and 28 at Warrensburg High School Media Center. The sessions will be facilitated by Jim Dittoe, a consultant with the NCAA who offers the Winning Communities program. He has more than 30 years of experience in the field of community and economic development, including leading boards, communities and staff in the development of missions, visions, goals and objectives for action. UCM President Charles Ambrose worked with the NCAA to help make Dittoe’s visit possible.

The visioning/action process for Warrensburg is a joint project of the NCAA Division II, the National Federation of State High School Association, the Missouri State High School Activities Association, The Greenleaf Center, and Winning Communities, Inc. Funding is made possible by the NCAA Division II, UCM and local government agencies. Additional support comes from Western Missouri Medical Center, Warrensburg and Warrensburg School District, area businesses, and Whiteman Air Force Base.

Young people from Warrensburg and the campus community are playing a key role in the program. Students from Warrensburg High School, UCM, and young professionals from WAFB’s Company Grade Officers Council and Airman’s Council are providing input over a three-month period to help develop a youth-based look toward the future.  Members of these groups participated in a kickoff meeting and Servant Leadership Training session in late February.

Results of the Building a Winning Community process will be available in May and will include action plans for each of the measurable objectives and recommended implementation strategies, timetables, and resources needed.

Individuals who would like to attend the public meetings are encouraged to RSVP to the Greater Warrensburg Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center at 660-747-3168. Additional information can be obtained on campus by calling Beth Rutt, director of campus activities, at 660-543-4381.
