Something for the Younger Audience

A Karagoz Play

The Performing Arts Series annually teams up with the UCM Department of Theatre to present a very special production for children, and Shadow Gets a Black Eye: a Karagoz Play will delight audiences of young and old alike. An evening performance with reserved seating is planned for Friday, Nov. 2, at 7:30 p.m., with daytime performances at 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov 1, Friday, Nov. 2; and 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, all in Hendricks Hall.

The play by Enver Sayan follows the adventures of Sam and Maysa, two American tourists in Turkey, as they encounter a variety of interesting characters. Under the direction of Julie Rae Pratt, associate professor of theatre, the modern interpretation of the traditional Turkish Karagoz puppet play offers positive messages about self-image, respect for other cultures and the importance of friendship.

Educators are encouraged to utilize these daytime performances as field opportunities for Pre-K through sixth grades. Groups, as well as individuals, are invited to attend all performances. The children's performance is sponsored by the UCM Department of Theatre.
