University Research Council

I. FUNCTION

A. To formulate policies and procedures pertaining to faculty research and scholarly activities

B. To assist the Graduate School and the Office of Sponsored Programs in promoting research and scholarly activities

C. To serve as a resource and liaison to departments and colleges

D. To review and recommend funding of faculty research leaves

E. To review and recommend graduate research funds and awards

II. POSITION IN THE ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE

Reports to the Provost through the Director of Sponsored Programs

III. MEMBERSHIP

A. Composition (9 members)

1. One faculty member from each college, Library Services, and University Graduate Council

2. Vice Provost for Academic Programs & Services

3. Director of Sponsored Programs

4. Research Compliance Officer

B. Selection

1. Faculty members nominated by Faculty Senate Committee on Committees and confirmed by Faculty Senate

2. Vice Provost for Academic Programs & Services (ex officio/non-voting)

                              3. Director of Sponsored Programs (ex officio/non-voting)

4. Research Compliance Officer (ex officio/non- voting)

C. Selection of Chair and Chair-elect

Shall select a chair and chair-elect from its faculty membership

D. Term of Service

1. Two years

2. Meets once a semester with additional meetings (face to face or electronically) as needed

3. No summer meetings

IV. COMMENTS

  •  Whenever possible, a second-year committee member should be selected as chair
  • The committee chair is responsible for a Procedures Manual, a copy to be kept in the Faculty Senate Office
  • Committees may conduct business and voting via electronic means
  • Members must complete the Responsible Conduct of Research training which is required in the first year of service
