Academic Course Load

Fall and Spring Semester Course Load Policy

The normal academic course load per semester for an undergraduate student is 15 or 16 semester hours. A full-time undergraduate student is one pursuing 12 or more semester hours of work per semester. The maximum academic load during fall and spring semesters is 18 semester hours. Upperclass students (60 or more earned hours) in good academic standing (minimum 2.00 GPA cumulative and UCM) may enroll for as many as 19 semester hours without special permission, but will need the assistance of an academic advisor or department chairperson to enroll in the last class.

Freshmen and sophomores desiring to exceed 18 semester hours must get approval from their major department chairperson. If there is not a declared major, students should seek permission from the Director of Gateway Advising and Major Exploration Center (WDE 1900). Students on academic probation may not enroll in more than 15 semester hours during any fall or spring semester of academic probation. If students are enrolled for course work at other institutions of higher education while concurrently enrolled at Central Missouri, the total number of semester hours taken in any enrollment period may not exceed the maximum specified for a full-time, resident student at Central Missouri.

Graduate students should consult with the School of Graduate Studies regarding graduate course load policies.

Summer Semester Course Load Policy

Undergraduate students who choose to attend summer semester are considered full time if enrolled for nine or more semester hours. Maximum course loads for summer are six hours during a three-week session and 12 hours for the entire summer semester. Undergraduate students may enroll for more than 12 hours with the approval of their major department chairperson. If there is not a declared major, students should seek permission from the Director of Gateway Advising and Major Exploration Center (WDE 1900).

Graduate students should consult with the School of Graduate Studies regarding graduate course load policies.

Academic Course Load and Financial Aid Eligibility

The course load policies above are for academic purposes only and may not meet the minimum requirements for scholarships or financial aid.  Students should consult with the Office of Student Financial Assistance (WDE 1100, 660-543-8266) to determine how many credit hours are required to maintain full-time or part-time status to remain eligible for financial assistance.
