Riley H. Pittman Outstanding Student Awards

The Riley H. Pittman Outstanding Student Award is given to an exceptional student each academic year. Students are nominated and selected by the faculty as the outstanding student in the undergraduate social work program.  

This award honors the legacy of Dr. Riley H. Pittman who was recruited by the University of Central Missouri to teach sociology and develop a sociology program.  He was chair of the department from 1957 to 1971; during that time the original 20 hours of coursework grew to include BA, BS, and MA degrees and a minor in sociology.  In 1971 he returned to full-time teaching until his retirement in 1976.  Since that time the department grew to include programs which award the BSW and the MS in social gerontology.  Following his retirement a fund was established to honor outstanding students. 

Department faculty members nominate students who meet the following criteria:

  • excellence in class-related activities
  • quality oral and written work
  • good leadership skills
  • a belief that the student will represent Central well in his/her chosen profession.

C. James Britton Scholarship

Dr. Jim Britton, in his 39 years of service to the Department of Sociology & Social Work, was a significant driving force in the development and success of the department.  Few people have personified the dedication to hard work and the desire to help students learn more than Dr. Britton.  Whether he was serving as department chair (which he did for 11 years) or whether he was teaching full-time, Dr. Britton was a positive influence on all who came in contact with him--both in and out of the classroom. It is with great honor that we offier the C. James Britton Scholarship to one outstanding student in sociology, social gerontology or social work each year. The application deadline each year is November 1st at 5:00 p.m.
